NUSTAR HOTEL CEBU EARNS MICHELIN GUIDE HONORS

NUSTAR Hotel, the first ultra-luxury hotel in Cebu recently earned a place in the coveted Michelin Guide list of recommended hotels this 2025.

This distinction places NUSTAR Hotel among an elite collection of hotels worldwide, each recommended by the prestigious Michelin Guide for excellence in design, architecture, service, personality and exceptional guest experiences.

Michelin Guide inspectors are themselves seasoned travellers and experts in design, service and hospitality.  They travel the globe and inspect hotels anonymously to ensure an unbiased evaluation.  Hotels are assessed based on these five criteria and those which excel are recommended for the Michelin Key, a distinction that recognizes exceptional hotels.

A Landmark Moment for Cebu and Philippine Tourism

The addition of the NUSTAR Hotel into the 2025 Michelin Guide Hotel List marks a major achievement for the Philippine hospitality industry, which has long been dominated by international hotel brands.

“The NUSTAR Hotel’s presence in the prestigious Michelin Guide is a proud and significant milestone not just for NUSTAR Hotel, but for Cebu and the entire Philippine hospitality industry,” said Sean Knights, Chief Operating Officer of NUSTAR Resort and Casino Cebu. “This recognition affirms our unwavering commitment to delivering an exceptional hotel product, allowing us to promote world-class experiences that celebrate Filipino culture, elevate service excellence and redefine the boundaries of luxury in the region.”

Along with the Fili Hotel which opened earlier in 2022, the NUSTAR Hotel opened in 2025 as the second of three hotels rising above the NUSTAR Resort & Casino, a prominent icon on the southern coast of Cebu City.  The integrated resort complex is operated by Universal Hotels and Resorts Inc. Foodie Moments in Latin America

As a certified foodie, sampling on local dishes is something I look forward on every trip. Here are Five hefty and memorable local meals I had from my recent trip to Central and South America. All cheap and casual.

Carne Mechada Casado (Costa Rica)

Casado is a traditional complete meal in Central America, consisting of rice, black beans, plantains, salad, a tortilla, and a protein. I had this at a food court inside public market in San Jose. Their public market is probably the cleanest, most well-maintained public market in any third world country.

    Bandeja Piasa (Bogota,Colombia)

I had this hefty plate of Bandeja Paisa, so i can try various dishes in one seating. Bandeja Paisa is a traditional Colombian dish that contains beans, rice, arepa, traditioinal chorizo, plantain, chicharrón, avocado and marinated ground beef (like arroz cubana). I’ve noticed that Latins serve avocado as a side without any sweeteners; in contrast to us who only appreciates the fruit when it’s mixed with something sweet and creamy.

    Trusca Frita (Ollantaytambo,Peru)

One of my fave set meals in Peru. trusca\trout is a local\Peruvian freshwater fish. Taste is very comparable to our local bangus, except that trout isn’t as boney. Speaking of fish, Peruvians are also popular with their Ceviche (raw fish salad), but for this trip, I had to pass on it. I avoid raw fish dishes whenever I can.

Trusca is usually served with Quinoa Sopas. Originating from the Andes Regions of Latin America, quinoa is a common and cheap carb consumed in Peru. Meanwhile, quinoa is quite expensive here in Ph.

    Peruvian Chicken BBQ (Cuzco,Peru)

The Butterflied chicken, marinated with vinegar and spice rub, slow-cooked on the grill and served on a bed of brown rice and Salsa. Not in photo, but this is served with traditional Aji Verde or the spicy green sauce.

    Street Tacos (Cancun, Mexico)

Taco is probably one of Mexico’s greatest contribution to the world. I had great tacos from random vendors, di ko na na-document lahat. Mahal dito sa Pinas pero street food lang talaga ito sa Mexico. Saya!

The Different Types of Tamale in Latin America. Tamales have a long history in Latin America, dating back to ancient civilizations and playing a central role in culture and religion. Tamales were originally created as a packed meal for hunters, warriors, and travelers. They were also considered sacred and were offered to the gods in rituals and feasts.  Tamale is Latin America’s answer to our very own Pastil of Mindanao.

Tamale of Colombia. I’ve had different types of Tamale during my travel, but Bogota gave me the best one. It’s packed with fragrant yellow rice and corn combination, carrot slices and chunks of braised pork rib and chicken, plus complimentary bread and coffee. Mura lang ito, around 100 pesos if converted.

Tamale from Yucatan, Mexico. Yucatecan tamales can be prepared baked, steamed, or even buried, and are wrapped with different leaves, such as banana, almond, and holly leaf (hoja santa). Unlike Colombia’s rice-based pack, the Mexican tamales use corn dough as carbohydrates, then filled with pork or chicken, egg, ground pumpkin seed, chaya, or xpelón, which is a type of bean from the region.

Sweet Corn Tamale, Cuzco, Peru. I also tried tamale at its simplest form. This steamed pack is just filled with corn dough and sweet corn bits, wrapped with corn husk.

One Day Binge Eating Around Puerto Princesa (with Prices and Menu)

During my recent trip to Puerto Princesa, Palawan, I had one spare-chill day to explore the local food scene of the lovely city. I tried to avoid famous touristy restaurants and preferred to check on hole in the walls where locals usually dine. Walkable restaurants lang within the city centre, particularly near Rizal Avenue where I stayed. Here’s how my day went.

    Breakfast:

I was on my leisurely 7 am walk from the city cathedral to Baywalk when I passed by this quaint food kiosk serving lomi near Balayong Pension House. Madami na’ng tao that early, and looking at their hefty serving, I already felt that I am at the right place to have breakfast. Huge bowl with egg and meat slices, meatballs, lumpia and chicharon topping with a load of garlic bits. Ala Eh’ Lomi is worthy of a recommendation.

    Lunch:

For lunch, local friends recommended Itoy’s Coffee Haus. Itoy’s is said to be the first legit coffee shop in PP, which also offers a lot of food choices on their menu. I tried the Sizzling Bulalo, which is said to be the house specialty; and it did not disappoint. Tender beef, marrow and a hefty creamy sauce to complete the set. 200 Pesos per serve, good for 2 pax.

    Noon Snack:

Reef Hotdog; A small hotdog stand near the provincial capitol with very high ratings on tripadvisor. I was intrigued with the reviews so I made time to check it out and it did not disappoint. The kiosk basically serves gourmet European style sausages with a great deal of sauces and toppings to choose from. I had pineapple curry sauce with caramelised onion for my cheesy Hungarian. Awesome!

The place is run by a German and his filipino wife. No wonder this is a to go place for foreigners. Buns range from 120 to 200 Pesos.

    Early dinner:

Puerto Princesa Baywalk Park. For early dinner, I met up with a friend to share a hefty meat, steamed vegetable and seafood boodle set with. 300 pesos lang for two pax, but seriously, this could feed more! Beachfront ambiance is also a plus plus plus for this place.

    Late night eats:

I had a hearty bowl of chao long noodles at Thalia’s to close off this binge eating. Chao long is basically Palawan’s version of the Vietnamese Pho. Palawan has strong ties with the vietnamese immigrants since the WW2. As such, Pho noodles, spring rolls and Bhan Me’s are common sight around the city.

Chao long, however, is really a rice and pork porridge dish in Vietnam, I don’t know why that name was given to a noodle dish when it arrived in Palawan. They must have had some translation issues in the past. But whatever! Bala sila dyan.

So there, I ordered beef stew chao long at Thalia’s. It was good. filling. broth is more on the sweet side with a kick of hot spice. There’s another more famous chao long in PP called Bona’s, but a local told me it is super MSG. As such, I opted to settle for Thalia’s. It did not disappoint.

So there you go, that is how Jose Manuel overeats. Sabayan nyo na ako next time. ‘Til then =)

Yolk’s Cafe & Cupcakery : Pastry, Pasta & Other Awesome Things

Yolk’s Cafe along Circumferential Road has been around for more than a year already. Many recent dining places have been sprouting everywhere in Davao, yet Yolk’s is still among my top recommendations when asked of staple comfort food. Good Pizza, pasta, staple filipino dishes in shareable serving, wide choices of frappes. Awesome! Not to mention the super instagrammable interiors. Kudos to the designer, if I may mention.

Price range: Set meals at 150 to 250 Pesos.  Ala carte dining, Say 200 to 250 Pesos/pax on shared orders. Majority of the dishes on the menu are good to share.

Location: Marfori. Near Seekhana, Caitlyns, Taco Loco and Mercury Marfori.

    My Personal Faves

Crab Fat Pasta. A Top fave at Yolk’s. Whenever I dine in, I usually advance order this entry and eat it last, because I like my Crab Fat Pasta at room temperature. I find the sauce more flavourful that way.

Seafood Black Pasta. Still with crab fat =)

    Buffalo Chicken Wings.

    Salmon Skewers

Chicken Casserole. Like Afritada-ish. Simple, yet filling.

    Sisig Dumplings

They also serve crispy pata, grilled pork belly, buttered shrimps and several salad sets to share

    The Frappes

Mango Cream Cake. They have a lot of cake style, but this is a personal fave.

Yolk’s also serves several sets for breakfast. They open early.

On the third day of DFAT 2015, the participants were invited for a late lunch treat by Alor’s Home Kitchen. ALOR’S is a notable food catering group that specializes in Oriental-Filipino fusion dishes. Alor’s as well serves lavish display of cocktails and dessert, buffet style, as carried by its pastry division, Dannie’s Patisserie.

Here are some of the best food entries that I personally recommend,

Crispy Baked Pork Belly is such a treat for meat lovers! Alor’s serves one of the best Crispy Belly I had here in Davao.

The Baked Imbao Clam is also a winner.

Other house specialties worth mentioning include Forty-Clove Chicken, Knock Out Knuckles and Spanish Callos.

The highlight of the lunch treat would definitely be the lavish dessert buffet prepared by Dannie’s.

My absolute favourite would be the Chocopology, a Chilled cake with layers of chocolate, mocha and cream at just the right amount of sweetness. It was actually my first time to try this and it effortlessly became a fave from first bite… Coming back to Alor’s is worthy even just for this.

Cinnamon Rolls And Delightful Meals by Annipie

Started from a humble bakeshop along Malvar Street during the 90’s, Annipie today has become the best known Cinnamon destination in Davao. Annipie’s specialty, the signature Cinnamon Rolls, is undoubtedly one of Davao’s finest, and have become a staple snack for lovers of sweets. Though locally produced, Annipie’s soft bread and refined flavour can indeed rival the famous cinnamon rolls in Metro Manila.

DFAT 2015 made a quick stop at Annipie to sample their fine offerings. Here are some of the best.

Apart from the Signature Cinnamon Rolls and pastries, Annipie also serves hearty and filling meals for lunch and dinner. Tasty and served in  big portions, theses meals are also worth a recommendation.

Pollo el Olivio ( Chicken in Olive and White Sauce ) is a personal favourite with its right blend of cream and spices with an added kick of Olive flavour. I honestly keep coming back for this. Definitely worth a try!

Contemporary Filipino Flavors of Cafe Tavera Restaurant

Adding up to Davao City’s vast and growing options for food and dining, Cafe Tavera along Avancena Street is undoubtedly making waves as among the city’s most recent best. Launched 2013, the restaurant serves Filipino food with a contemporary twist; And not to mention a notable polished ambiance and great interiors, fit for intimate dining experience.

What I liked the most about Cafe Tavera is their wide range of Menu, from all sorts of live seafood to staple meat dishes, and they have quite a number of salad and appetizer choices, as well as vegetable dishes. Personally, I find Cafe Tavera a good option for Vegetarians, as well as non pork/red meat diners.

One thing I find unique with Cafe Tavera is on how they included Salted egg on Salads and special sauces , which I find very Filipino. Here are some of the restaurant’s best, which I personally loved and are worthy of a recommendation.

    cafe tavera paco salad
Paco Salad with green Mango and Salted Egg . Very Filipino ! A great alternative to the usual Ceasar Salad.

    cafe tavera langka
Langka Bulad sa Gata. A staple Bisaya dish of green (young) jackfruit with Dried Fish chunks in Coconut milk sauce. Very Filipino

Cafe Taveraa Prawn in Butter and Salted Egg Sauce
Prawns in White Sauce of Butter, spices and Salted Egg , which I find the taste new and very interesting ! A Must try.

    cafe tavera singaporean crab
Big Crabs in Chili Garlic Sauce. A House specialty

    cafe tavera Imbao
Cafe Tavera Imbao Soup ( A Type of Clam ) . This is among the best clam soup I tried ever. Unlike the usual Imbao soup, this has a bit of citrus-cy – lemon grass taste to it , which I find interesting. Another of Cafe Tavera’s contemporary twist.

    Cafe Tavera Dragon Balls
Dragonball ( Pork meat balls ) made to look cute and interesting . =)

Fresh : P 345.00 Sumptuous Korean Buffet by Korea Town Restaurant (Davao)

Finally , a full course Korean Buffet has just been launched by Korea Town Restaurant for all of Davao’s food enthusiasts. More than just unlimited Bulgogi, the buffet includes:

10 staple side dishes, unlimited serving of Kimbap ( Korean version of Maki), Kimchi soup, popular Korean street food like ddeokbokki (rice cake in spicy sauce) and Mandu (meat and vermicelli dumpling), 6-7 other popular korean meat dishes. All these for P 345.00.

Here are some of the snapshots I took to perk up your kimchi craving =)

My top fave viands served were Jaeyook Bokum / Stir fried pork and kimchi (the reddish one on the saucer) and the Yangnyeom Tongdak/ spicy Korean Fried chicken . =)

    korean town bulgogi
Beef Bulgogi . A bit filipinized in my opinion, but still good =)

My top fave viands served were Jaeyook Bokum / Stir fried pork and the Yangnyeom Tongdak/ spicy Korean Fried chicken . =) Kimbap and Mandu dumplings were also good. Some dishes were adjusted to filipino taste (less spicy than I expected), but overall, the buffet set is hearty and very filling. The buffet does not include tabletop grilling , as the bulgogi dishes are pre cooked and served on warmers.

The place is modest, and the attendants are in nice traditional Korean dresses. The Korean owner is also accommodating and very much willing to chitchat and introduce her dishes . No service charge on top of the bill.

Overall the place is worthy of a recommendation =)

Sumptuous Payday Buffet by Helen’s Kitchen

Hungry and curious on finding awesome restaurants in Davao, me and a friend Ar. Pen Tancio decided to check the P 499.00 payday buffet of Helen’s Kitchen, located along Buhangin Road, Davao City. Much to our expectation, what we had was a lavish heavy dinner, of more than 10 specialty dishes, tasty and worth every peso. =)

Serving buffet every 15th  and 30th/31st of the month , Helens Kitchen offers a sumptuous dinner which includes Lechon Baboy ( Roasted Pork ) , plus 10 of their staple house specialties such as Patatim , Chili Crab , Iberian Chicken , grills, BBQ’s to name a few.  The buffet also comes with a generous serving of appetizers, salads, desserts and bottomless iced tea/lemonade.

As a certified foodie infact, I find this restaurant the most ” Sulit ” among Davao Buffet restaurants below five hundred pesos, for serving that much food choices, and are prepared with quality and standard. As Such, Helen’s Kitchen payday buffet is worthy of a high recommendation. =)

Korean Style Hotpot/Shabu-shabu at Bulgogi Brothers Ph

Last friday, a few Davao Blogger members were invited for food tasting and menu update of Bulgogi Brothers Phils. at SM Lanang, Davao City.

Famous in South Korea, Bulgogi Brothers is a casual dining restaurant chain specialized in Korean dishes and bulgogi ( marinated Korean barbecue ). As an added knowledge for everyone, The word “bul” means fire and “gogi” means meat, in Korean.

Bulgogi Brothers Philippines is the first franchise outside South Korea , which gained popularity on Filipino food enthusiasts with branches at Greenbelt 5, Alabang Town Center, Mall of Asia, Glorietta 2 in Manila, and SM Lanang in Davao.  Thats five aggressive branches in just a short span of time.

The recently launched Bulgogi Brothers Phils. Three way Shabu Shabu Set

As an addition to the restaurant menu, Bulgogi Brothers Phils. introduces its Three-way Shabu shabu – Korean Style. Originated from East Asia ( Korea, Mongolia , China , Japan ) , Shabu-shabu is a traditional way of tabletop hot pot cooking where meat and vegetables are boiled in bubbling hot broth , seasoned with oriental flavors and spices.  Hot pots are always a fun dining experience with family and friends.

Bulgogi Brothers Phils.’ version of Shabu-shabu

Twisting from the traditional way of hot pots, Bulgogi Brother’s Three way Shabu-shabu is more than just the usual hot pot soup. The feast begins with the server pouring a tasty broth onto the pot, bringing it to a brisk simmer by cranking up the heat on the metal hot plate. Guests can savor the stew with an additional order of rice.

    bulgogi brothers seafood set
Fresh mixed seafood Hot Spot : a plate of fresh and plump clams, blue crab, mussels and squid cooked over a spicy broth. A sureball winner among all Bulgogi Brothers Hot pot Set .

Next, a plate of Ramyun noodles arrives on the table. Because shabu-shabu encourages guests to be their own cook, they can toss the noodles together with the meat and other vegetables for a distinctly flavorful pot of Ramyun noodles.

Towards the end of the meal the server creates tasty rice porridge (juk) from the same shabu-shabu broth with Korean rice topped with seaweed, vegetables and egg for a truly filling meal.

For a unique flavor that’s suited to their liking, diners have the option to choose what meat goes into their hotpot. There’s Beef and Veggies, beef bulgogi on a garden of leeks, peppers, cabbage, bean sprouts and mushroom; Ham and Sausage, a marriage of American and Korean flavors with ham, sausage, cabbage, bean sprouts, mushroom and gochujang (Korean hot chili paste); and Mixed Seafood, a plate of fresh and plump clams, blue crab, mussels and squid cooked over a spicy broth.

Since the 90’s, Garden Oases Resort and Convention Center has always been a familiar venue for weddings and assemblies , with its accessible location, amenities and spacious lawns ideal for various occasions. And with the addition of its multi leveled Ritz Hotel just a few years back, Garden Oases has well maintained its niche as one of the top and most convenient places to stay here in Metro Davao.

Earlier today, i tagged along with a few friends for lunch and food tasting of their new food entries at Garden Oases’ Restaurant. We were catered by Garden Oases and Ritz Hotel’s PR Manager , Ms. Alice Cadao. It was quite an intimate gathering with just a few people invited, which gave us a chance to get to know the restaurant better. And indeed, there is definitely more to Garden Oases than just a Resort-Hotel , with all the sumptuous food entries served at their poolside restaurant.  Here are some of the recently added menu Entries with a twist , which I personally liked:

I would have wanted to get inside the Sultan’s Palace but it only opens at certain times of the year. As such, locals recommend tourists to visit Brunei , the week after Ramadan . It is when the Kingdom is at its most festive. They also said that The Sultan’s palace opens for locals and tourists , and sumptuous buffet is served by the royal family for three days , which is open for everybody.  And if lucky enough, you might also get a chance to see the Sultan . Thats something I look forward to experience when I visit Brunei Again =)

Dining with Style at Saging Repablik

Last thursday, a few members of Davao Bloggers’ Society were invited for food and dessert tasting at Saging Repablik , one of Davao’s newest , and possibly the most talked about restaurant these days.  Saging Repablik is located along Tiongko Ave. corner V Mapa St., a few blocks from Bangko Central. It would be impossible not to notice this two storey glass box building, fully lighted at night. The bold lighting , matte black signages and polished concrete finish gave its contemporary industrial look , which reminds me so much of  some restaurants I’ve visited in Singapore.

Saging Repablik opened its doors sometime around late June of this year. Barely three months old, people are still buzzing over this modern style restaurant serving specialty Asian/Filipino dishes , with a twist of Banana.  Saging Repablik is uniquely Davao Born. The restaurant’s concept was derived from Banana ( Saging in Filipino ), which Davao region is also famous for producing.  Aside from serving local dishes,  the restaurant also promotes local banana products such as flavored cavendish chips, as well as locally made chocolate products.

As a curious person, I admit that it wasn’t my first time to dine at Saging Repablik the time our Bloggers group was invited. Ive been to this place three times already for coffee and their Banana-Walnut Torte , which is probably one of the best Torte I had.  It is made up of layers of caramelized Banana, Chocolate, Walnut and Something like Sansrival , perfectly coated with chilled cream. I would say this Dessert alone, already makes Saging Repablik worthy of a visit. =)
