Ok, dahil kain lang ako ng kain lately, I thought of shortlisting some 10 memorable street food moments and lamons from my recent biyahes around. Nothing super fancy, basta yung mga casual, simple at cheap pagkain lang; nonetheless, authentic pa din. Walang cheeseburger dito ha? So here goes. Enjoy. =)

1.) Pho, Ho Chi Minh (2013): Nung binubuo ko pa lang this compilation, first that came into my mind was the Pho I had from a modest sidewalk set up eatery named Bum Bo Hue, along Bui Vien Street. Sobrang sarap, sobrang fresh ng sangkap, very pretty looking, it’s actually unforgettable. Pho is a traditional beef (or chicken) broth soup ng Vietnam na madaming leafy herbs, usually cilantro or fresh mint. Iba din arrive nya compared sa other Asian soup. Super nice din nung lady owner, that she gave me kakanin. A big bowl was around 50,000 dong ( around $ 2.5 usd, 100 pesos ). This may not be the cheapest, but it was highly recommended by the hostel staff. Typical sa Ho Chi Minh yung naglalatag lang sa sidewalk ng tables and chairs, lalo na pag gabi; sobrang Vibrant ng place.

2.) Authentic Pad Thai, Bangkok (2013): Though madami naman masarap na Pad Thai everywhere, iba pa din when you get to enjoy a freshly cooked set along Rambuttri o Khaosan Road. As such, deserving to ng spot dito sa compilation. Pad Thai is an authentic Thai noodle dish that is mildly sweet and mildly tangy (from its tamarind-based sauce), and usually topped with peanut and drizzled with lemon. This one in the picture is a vegetarian set. Tofu lang yun gamit. around 59 Bhat (100 Pesos)

3.) Poh Piah, Singapore (2013): This may be ordinary for some, pero sobrang na enjoy ako sa Poh Piah na nakain ko dun sa SG. Poh Piah s a Fujian/Chaozhou-style fresh spring roll that is sweet,peanuty and medyo crunchy inside kasi magulay. This is also common in Taiwan, Malaysia and Thailand. This one on the photo was around 2 Sgd.

4.) Curry Mutton Balls, Kolkatta (2014): Ito ung first meal ko sa India, kaya memorable kasi sa labas lang to ng public market kasabay yung mga locals, kaya sobrang authentic ng feel. Sobrang flavourful din ng dish na ito. Wag na kayong ano, mahilig talaga ako sa curry. This was only 25 Rupees (Around 25 Pesos), may kasamang Paratha (Indian bread prepared on a griddle, and lightly oiled).

5.) Masala Omelette Sandwich, Delhi (2014): Simple lang, super cheap ,like 25 Rupee (around 25 Pesos) pero sobrang saya ko na dito. Masala is a traditional Indian spice mix. Di ko ma explain ano lasa nito. Alanganin curry, alanganin cumin, basta very pungent. May fresh Onion pa at Coriander combined with the omelette. Overwhelming for some, pero sarap na sarap ako. Common to sa Pajar Ganj. 2x ko to breakfast when I was in Delhi.

6.) Kusum Mutton Roll, Kolkatta (2014): Nabasa ko to noon kay Migrationology.com. Its basically like kebab, only that the grilled mutton stuffing is somewhat curried, and is wrapped with a Paratha (Indian bread prepared on a griddle, and lightly oiled) and walang garlic sauce/white sauce for this; just red onion, onion stalk and light chili sauce. Mga 70-80 Rupees per piece.

7) Souvlaki, Athens (2015): Souvlaki is Greece’s version of Beef Kebab. This one in the photo is from a famous eatery called ‘Thanalis’ in Athens, which is known to serve good wraps. Souvlaki is somewhat more comparable to India’s Kusum Roll, kasi the wrapper is prepared almost the same way. Mas madami lang anik anik itong sa Greek like tomato, red onion, and may potato fries pa, tas may white sauce. Around 3 Euros (150 Pesos) pero generous naman sa size.

8.) Not so traditional Salami Pizza, Rome (2015): Di ko na maalala ung name, nahanap ko lang to sa tabi tabi eh. Sobrang nasarapan ako dito, among all pizza na natry ko dun. May fresh basil leaves to under the salami. 3 to 4 Euros per serve.

9.) Kimbap, Seoul (2015): Kimbap is like Korea’s version of maki/sushi… Only that feeling ko, theirs is more basic, fastfood-ish, and are usually stuffed with ham,egg, cheese and crispy vegetables.And like a typical Korean dish, may this one has a kick of Sesame oil. Common to sa mga subway hawkers around seoul. If you are not into the strong smelling fishcake and the spicy deokbokki, then this is your next best streetfood option in Korea.

10.) Hongkong Style Skewers (2015): Hongkong is also every man’s streetfood heaven. Lahat ng cravings mo on international levels, nandun nah sa streets nila; kaya deserving din to ng spot sa compilation. Among all skewers, itong bacon wrapped sausage ang favourite ko. Basta may bacon, I’ll rest my case. Lol

11.) Gulab Jamun, Delhi (2014) : Ito ang tunay na masarap! Jamun is a Solid Milk-based Mithai (Indian Sweets). Usually caramelized, minsan meron pang rose flavour, o saffron flavour… kaya nagiging kakaiba na ung taste.

12.) Belgian Waffle, Brussels(2016): Bilang sarado gana, sasali ko sa list this super pretty Belgian Waffle i had near the Grand Place in Brussels. Mejo chewy ung mismong waffle, ganun daw tlga ang authentic. Generous ang topping, and smothered with real white chocolate. Sobrang filling. This one is at 4 Euros, pero good for 2 na to.

Yun lang muna guys. Sana nagutom kayo =)

Street life in Kolkata India

Coming from Southeast Asia, Kolkata is probably one of the cheapest way to enter India. Thanks to Airasia, I only got my promo ticket for around 2,200 pesos ( 45 usd) from Kuala Lumpur.

Kolkata is located on the east banks of Indian Subcontinent, and is a state once the center of British Colonialism in East India . Colonial architecture and influences are still evident in almost every corner of the City. And I have seen more Catholic Christians here, than elsewhere In India.

Kolkata may not be as ancient and as rich in architecture and history compared to central India; But here , is where I’ve seen a picture of poverty and the effects of over population; The India , that is beyond the manicured Gardens and the Glitz of what Bollywood. My Stay in Kolkata was short, but indeed it was an experience.

Indians eat sliced cucumber like ordinary fruit as sold on the streets.

A cemetery at the middle of the City , with centuries old tombs , it was told that this place should be free entrance, but apparently, someone was asking for 100 INR fee when i went there.

The public bath is an enclosed building by the way, this is just a water source outside the building, which is also free for use.

Kolkata Metro Train Station / Subway,

Kolkata Subway .. Its fairly clean, i mean, coming from the Philippines, I should not complain — Kolkata Subway .. The Station Floors are fairly clean, i mean, coming from the Philippines, I should not complain … Its just that the Train Cabs are overly crowded.

Guesthouse Recommendation : Sunflower Guesthouse , Royd Street.

Decent Bedroom at Sunflower Guesthouse. Other Guesthouse nearby are in the rough shape. This ones better . at 12 USD / Non Air . Accommodation in Kolkata are pricey, i dont understand why.

Pushnak Hostel, Intl. The only Dorm type accommodation in downtown Kolkata I came across with. around 350 INR ( 6 USD), but the condition is a bit undesirable , sadly. So I opt to get a better room bed/room instead at sunflower guesthouse.

Backpacking Delhi on a Cheap

Delhi was my last stop when I visited India , and as expected, my budget for this backpacking leg was expectedly depleting. I came from Agra, and food , accommodation and fare were a bit pricey there, not to mention the entrances. Given that, I tried to find cheap options for my 3 nights stay in Delhi. Here are some highlights. Was the savings worth the hassle ? Lets find out. =)

Agra to Delhi is around 5 hours train ride , given the short distance, i opt to get the cheapest train seat class ( The sleeper’s class ) for 250 INR ( 4 usd ). It was difficult to personally get tickets at the station, but fortunately, A couchsurfing friend of mine booked my tickets online, which was a huge help ! The ticket booth in Agra was full packed, because it was Friday. and it would be close to impossible for me to get tickets on my own.

The Cheap Train Ride

The train to Delhi arrived 4 hours late, And whats even more hassle is that I actually hopped on the wrong train! Though still heading its way to Delhi , but the train will stop at a southern station. I was a bit scared because the train officer might just shove me off the train at the middle of nowhere . But soon I found out that the officers do not check tickets at the sleeper’s class. Hooray for me!

For Hassle free bookings, ask the hotel receptionist to book your tickets. Better seats at 600 + INR (10 + usd) will be offered to you, nonetheless. And it comes with food water and snacks.

Metro Train

Getting around Delhi is actually easy and inexpensive, thanks to the efficient metro Train embracing all corners of the city.

Where I stayed :

Here are the Iconic spots in delhi that I’ve Visited , without spending much on entrances.

The Ashkadram Hindu Temple. Built during 1990’s , and is probably one of the most intricately made temples I’ve been to. Highly recommended to Visit . This place also has a great vegetarian food court !

Location : 10 minutes walk from Ashkadram Station.

Ideal Time to Visit : Afternoon . allot 3 – 4 hours for the shows. 9:30 am – 7:30 pm , Tuesday to Sunday . (monday closed )

Entrance : Getting in is free of charge , since it is a place for worship! But the show ( Religious Hindu Movie) and other activities require a minimum fee of around 130 INR ( 2.5 USD ).

Ashkadram Temple . entrance is Free. but picture taking is not allowed at the temple grounds.

Lotus Temple : Place for Balai Worship .

Location : around 10 minutes walk from Kalkaji Mandir Train Station. The temple can immediately be seen from the train.

Time to visit : 9:30 am – 5:30 pm , Tuesday to Sunday . (monday closed )

Entrance : Free !

BaLai Temple ( more known as the Lotus Temple) in Delhi. Contrary to the usual notion, This is not a hindu or Buddhist Temple . This is a Church of Balai , a congregation where all other religions are welcome and encouraged to worship under on roof, promoting unity and acceptance between people of different backgrounds.

Iskcon Hindu Temple : One of the most Iconic Hindu Temple in Delhi . Here you will meet a lot of westerners do volunteering works in India.

Location : at the back of Lotus Temple . Across the Tree Park

Time to visit : open all days of the week. 4:30 am to 9 pm

Entrance : Free !

As for the other historical spots like Jama Masjid and the Red Fort near Chandni Chowk, I just passed by them , since blog say the Red fort is very similar to Agra Fort, which I visited Already . And the entrances are expensive !

When In Delhi , food allowance of 400 INR/ day (around 7-8 usd) is actually enough if you are on a tight budget, as there are cheap sandwiches and vegetarian set meals (Thali) which is only around 60 – 80 INR ( 1 USD ) . But seriously, you wouldn’t want to deprive yourself all the time, right? Set Aside a better allowance for food and enjoy authentic Indian Cuisine. Must Try Affordable Restaurants in Delhi

Food is fairly cheap in India, as compared to other Cities Ive visited , including Metro Manila. For the tight budgeted , food allowance of 400 INR/day ( 7-8 USD ) is enough , but will most likely limit you with basic and street food. Below are most of the affordable restaurants I’ve tried, with its corresponding price range, to give you an idea how much food costs in Delhi ,( and similarly with other cities in India I ve visited ).

Odiya Hotel near New Delhi Railway Station . Main Bazaar . Price range 80 – 150 INR ( 1-3 usd )

Street Side Food along Pajar Ganj, Delhi

For the Meat Lovers, I highly recommend trying Stewed Lamb at Bhape da Hotel, in Connaught Place , Delhi . Just google the walking direction from Rajiv Chowk Train Station . Not the cheapest option, with price ranging at 200 – 300 INR ( 4-5 usd) , but food is really good ! This restaurant is also recommended by migrationology.com as among his fave street food worthy of travel.

The Bhape da Hotel Restaurant , mentioned by Migrationology.com as on of his fave Indian Eatery. Stewed Lamb was super Delicious.

Just to give you an idea of the price range of food in India. This is not the cheapest Restaurant , but the place is OK.

Mutton Shawarma ( just the filling ) no pita . 40 INR ( less than 1 USD ) . I mixed this with my Biryani Rice. =)

Agra City and the Taj Mahal Up Close

Probably the most Significant – recognized Symbol of Indian Architecture is the Taj Mahal , of Agra, Uttar Pradesh State, Central India. The monument was conceived out of the love of the king Shah Jahan for his deceased wife, Mumtaz Mahal . Repeatedly mistaken as a temple or a mosque, Taj Mahal is in fact a Mausoleum, where the remains of Mumtaz Mahal, and the King , are buried , right at the center of the marble building. The Taj Mahal is widely recognized as “the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world’s heritage.

Taj Mahal at 7 am, just in time when visitors start coming in.

Taj Mahal is located at the center of Agra city , in fact, the industry of this city is mainly on tourism revolving around the Heritage Complex. Agra is a fairly smaller city, as compared to Kolkata or Delhi. And being a touristic place, be aware of the overpriced touts and souvenir vendors around the perimeter of the complex. Better buy entrance tickets at legitimate agencies , or at the complex itself.

Entry to Taj Requires a ticket of 750 INR ( 13 USD ) , which can be purchased from the three entranceways to the complex , namely , West Gate , South Gate ( near Taj Ganj and Market ) , and the East Gate ( near shilpgram , the more quiet side of Agra where nice hotels are located ). Any Hotel and Guesthouse in Agra can also assist you with this.

Best Time to Visit : Sunrise, at around 7 am. When tourist crowds are minimal. By 9 am, locals came flocking in.

When Entering Taj, do note that food , beverages, pens, cigarettes, lighters , Video recorder and even tripods are forbidden inside the complex. Still cameras and cellphones are allowed after security check.

The Marble Grounds of the tomb is well taken care of. Before stepping on the main tomb structure, Shoes should be wrapped with fabric. which is handed over to you with the ticket.

The Classy 5 star Hotel of The Oberoi Amarvilas Agra is also worth a visit , which is located within the area of Taj Mahal East Gate and Shilpgram. For an extra Budget, it would be nice to cool down at this hotel for coffee or tea, right after visiting Taj complex.

Chow mien at the guesthouse i stayed, which was very good.

Having loads of spice powders and condiments is a usual sight when dining in India. For them, life is more than just Salt and pepper.

Other than these two monuments, and the Classy Amarvilla 5 star Hotel, theres nothing else to See in Agra City itself. I actually find the restaurants there very limited and overpriced . And traveling by rickshaw is total rip off. A Two nights stay at this city will suffice.

Where I stayed :

Friends Paying Guesthouse , 10 minutes walk to Taj Mahal East Gate , the quiet side of Agra. Rooms are at around 10 usd for two people . This is already a good deal considering the location of the guesthouse , which is just minutes away from the Taj.

Landmark ( ShilpGram complex , where tickets to Taj Mahal East Gate are sold ) Upon Arriving in Agra, tell your rickshaw to bring you at ShilpGram / Taj Mahal East Gate, and walk to the guesthouse with google map. it is impossible to miss.

Getting To Agra :

5 hours Train From Delhi , or 4 hours Train from Jaipur . ( Agra somewhere almost halfway between the two. ) AC Train Ticket at around 700 INR ( 12 usd ) via the hotel or agency , or cheap sleeper’s ticket at 255 INR (4 usd) via online , which is more difficult to secure.

I do not recommend getting on a day trip bus as it will take much of your time.

Indian Architecture of Jaipur, Rajasthan

Jaipur , is probably the best city I’ve visited during my 15 days stay in India. Although described by the lonely planet as “diesel soaked streets “, I actually found Jaipur more safe and in order, as compared to other cities i’ve visited. Maybe its because I found a nice accommodation tucked in a less crowdy part of city, which is also not too far from the center (which I will discuss on my next post). In addition, I find the public buses of Jaipur easy to navigate from one heritage site to another. Jaipur has no metro subway station by the way.

Jaipur is the Capital of Rajasthan, a desert state at the west side of India, bordering Pakistan . Lahore Pakistan can in fact be reached from Rajasthan by Bus. Being a Desert State, the landscape is undeniably different as the hue of the city turns sunny, sandy and yellow pinkish.

Once being the center of Mughal Rule by the Royal Bloods during the 17th and 18th century, Jaipur itself is rich in old and iconic Indian Architecture and well preserved Heritage Sites .

This city should not be missed when visiting India. Spend at least 2 nights. Jaipur is around 4-5 hours train ride from Agra.

Hawah Mahal , The Palace of the Wind, dedicated to the women of the King . The palaces architecture is designed to have a lot of air passages , latticed walls and funnels to cool the palace interiors, as such , the name, Palace of the Winds.

This place is around 15 minutes walk from the city palace complex.

Bus Ride from Hawah Mahal to Amber Fort , which is at the next town, about 20-30 minutes away.

Ive visited all those forts with the composite ticket I bought for 650 INR , which i find very practical to see all those Heritage sites in a Day .

Jaipur Hotel Lobby , almost all the boutique hotels Ive visited have lavish embellishments and hand painted frescos which gives it that authentic indian feel.

India Visa on Arrival for Pinoys (UPDATED Feb. 2015)

Its no secret that a lot of people, including me, factor in “the need for VISA” whenever we choose which country to visit next. Airline tickets to some favourite destinations may be cheap if booked on promo, but still , we think twice , because of the VISA Requirements , which is an added expense and is very taxing to secure, and especially for me, living hours flight away from the capital region where all the foreign embassies are. But fortunately , some particular dream destinations of mine offer Visa on Arrival . India and Nepal were among the top of my list. Back when I was planning my trip India , It was such a relief to know that we Filipinos need not go through the Visa approval process with the Indian Embassy in Manila, since we are granted to enter India via “Tourist VISA on ARRIVAL” on certain International airports. Kolkata included, which is probably the cheapest flight route option to enter India, with Airasia Promo. Other countries are Finland, Japan, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Singapore, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Indonesia and Myanmar. (as of 2011) . From April 15, 2014 it was extended to include South Korea ( GOINDIA.ABOUT.COM) . The visas are issued at Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata ; and from August 15, 2013, Kochi, Trivandrum, Hyderabad and Bangalore.Maximum validity of a tourist VOA is 30 days. A VOA is strictly for tourism purposes and is not applicable for other types of visa. What I brought with me :

Passport with 6-month validity
2 passport size photographs white background (They took only 1 photo.)
Photocopy of passport
Hotel booking, even for just the first night. (the TVOA form requires an Address/contact in India)
Return ticket or Exit ticket to Nepal in my case
Bank certificates , credit card statement for the recent two months , and related documents to prove the availability of funds sufficient for the duration of stay in India.
60 USD TVOA Fee , or in the case of Kolkata Airport , they asked me for 3,600 Indian Rupees . Good thing I already changed some of my dollars to INR when I was still in KL.

Arrived at around 12 MN in Kolkata, and it took me an hour to wait at the immigration office for the TVOA . The indian officers that time were quite relaxed, there were only two of us getting the TVOA. The other two were indonesians. Of all the documents I brought, they only took One picture, the payment, and photocopied my passport ( they did not accept the Photocopies I brought with me). I just filled up the form they provided, and they did not even bother to check my e ticket, hotel booking , and funds documents etc. The officers were probably tired at that hour. But still, I recommend you bring all those documents, just in case. KEEP the 3,600 INR VISA Receipt! Getting the TVOA in Kolkata was surprisingly easy for me. It was even more difficult to get through Philippine Immigration at some point. The Immigration officers we have are sometimes OA .

Getting out of the Airport to Kolkata City Center, Since I arrived pass midnight, I opt to spend the night at the airport, which was recommended by some forums. It would be difficult to commute at that hour, and doing that also saved my One night hotel expense. So I just had find a corner in that huge, super cold airport, spread my jacket and lay on the floor. There were not much people sleeping at the airport, as compared to my SG or KL experience. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport ( Kolkata Airport ) is modern and relatively new, the terminal two where we landed started operating 2012. It was nice and all, but the Toilet bowl was , uhm…. skidmarked ! which was a welcoming sight for me in India. This sight occured many times in almost all cities Ive been. hahaha. But carry lang =) around 6 am , I checked on the exit to find the local bus. but apparently, Buses start at 8 am… So I opt to get an airport taxi instead for 150 INR (2.5 USD) to take me to the nearest train station, which was DumDum Metro Train , around 10-15 minutes crazy overspeeding ride crossing highways and cows and goats are everywhere lounging at the middle of the road. My First taste of Indian RUSH ! haha At Dumdum , It was also tricky to find the right METRO STATION to the City , as this train station is interconnected to the rest of the provinces. Do not go up the first train station building, as this is the inter city railway routes. Ask the locals to lead you to the METRO STATION , which is just a few walks away . From there, I had my first Non Air , Full packed , Indian Train Ride to the City center. And my Indian backpacking experience went on …. =)

The City of Jaipur gave to me probably the best Indian travel experience by far , with its rich history of Mughal kingdoms, Royalties and Maharajas, the well preserved Mughal/Indian Architecture , a lot of street food, kebabs, shawarmas , and best affordable accommodations.

Preview of my Kolkata Experience..

Chaotic? Well, yes. But it is the busy streets, the loudest horns and crowded markets that makes this colonial city Incredibly India, as it is. I may not have seen much of historic Mughal heritage sites in this place , but there is already so much going on in every corner , that makes Kolkata , interesting.
