Contemporary Filipino Flavors of Cafe Tavera Restaurant

Adding up to Davao City’s vast and growing options for food and dining, Cafe Tavera along Avancena Street is undoubtedly making waves as among the city’s most recent best. Launched 2013, the restaurant serves Filipino food with a contemporary twist; And not to mention a notable polished ambiance and great interiors, fit for intimate dining experience.

What I liked the most about Cafe Tavera is their wide range of Menu, from all sorts of live seafood to staple meat dishes, and they have quite a number of salad and appetizer choices, as well as vegetable dishes. Personally, I find Cafe Tavera a good option for Vegetarians, as well as non pork/red meat diners.

One thing I find unique with Cafe Tavera is on how they included Salted egg on Salads and special sauces , which I find very Filipino. Here are some of the restaurant’s best, which I personally loved and are worthy of a recommendation.

cafe tavera paco salad
Paco Salad with green Mango and Salted Egg . Very Filipino ! A great alternative to the usual Ceasar Salad.
cafe tavera langka
Langka Bulad sa Gata. A staple Bisaya dish of green (young) jackfruit with Dried Fish chunks in Coconut milk sauce. Very Filipino
Cafe Taveraa Prawn in Butter and Salted Egg Sauce
Prawns in White Sauce of Butter, spices and Salted Egg , which I find the taste new and very interesting ! A Must try.
cafe tavera singaporean crab
Big Crabs in Chili Garlic Sauce. A House specialty
cafe tavera Imbao
Cafe Tavera Imbao Soup ( A Type of Clam ) . This is among the best clam soup I tried ever. Unlike the usual Imbao soup, this has a bit of citrus-cy – lemon grass taste to it , which I find interesting. Another of Cafe Tavera’s contemporary twist.
Cafe Tavera Dragon Balls
Dragonball ( Pork meat balls ) made to look cute and interesting . =)

Fresh : P 345.00 Sumptuous Korean Buffet by Korea Town Restaurant (Davao)

Finally , a full course Korean Buffet has just been launched by Korea Town Restaurant for all of Davao’s food enthusiasts. More than just unlimited Bulgogi, the buffet includes:

10 staple side dishes, unlimited serving of Kimbap ( Korean version of Maki), Kimchi soup, popular Korean street food like ddeokbokki (rice cake in spicy sauce) and Mandu (meat and vermicelli dumpling), 6-7 other popular korean meat dishes. All these for P 345.00.

Here are some of the snapshots I took to perk up your kimchi craving =)

Kimbap ( Korean version of Japanese Maki Roll ) The difference to Maki is that Kimbap usually has pickled vegetables in it. Kimbap is a popular street food in Korea.

The buffet includes 10 Staple Korean Side dishes. Korean food lovers are probably familiar with these on the picture =)

My top fave viands served were Jaeyook Bokum / Stir fried pork and kimchi (the reddish one on the saucer) and the Yangnyeom Tongdak/ spicy Korean Fried chicken . =)
korean town bulgogi
Beef Bulgogi . A bit filipinized in my opinion, but still good =)

My top fave viands served were Jaeyook Bokum / Stir fried pork and the Yangnyeom Tongdak/ spicy Korean Fried chicken . =) Kimbap and Mandu dumplings were also good. Some dishes were adjusted to filipino taste (less spicy than I expected), but overall, the buffet set is hearty and very filling. The buffet does not include tabletop grilling , as the bulgogi dishes are pre cooked and served on warmers.

The place is modest, and the attendants are in nice traditional Korean dresses. The Korean owner is also accommodating and very much willing to chitchat and introduce her dishes . No service charge on top of the bill.

Overall the place is worthy of a recommendation =)

Biyaheng Pinas : Stop-over Foodtrip in Ilo-ilo City

For Davaoeno’s , landing on Ilo-ilo City Airport would most likely be the easy, yet practical entry point to any of the provinces in Panay , and most particularly to Caticlan(Boracay Island). There are still no direct commercial flights from Mindanao to Caticlan and vice versa, at the moment, connecting flights from Davao through Manila then Caticlan (Boracay Island) would be too expensive.

Charming and rich, Ilo-ilo is not just a monotonous city for a short stop over . Boasting its affluent Ilonggo history, as well as its abundance with oysters, shellfish and other seafood, I say this city is also worthy of a leisurely visit for a day or two.

On my most recent visit to Boracay, I had a bonus chance to spend an overnight in Ilo-ilo before leaving for Negros the following day. Tired and time restraint, I opted to skip the usual historic tour. But I made sure to check on this city’s food scene, which should never be missed ! Here are some of the food trips I had around Ilo-ilo 🙂

First Stop, Lapaz Batchoy from the Original Branch of Deco’s at Lapaz Public Market, which has been serving this staple Ilonggo tummy warmer prior to WW2. ( 1936, as told to me by the staff) .  This Super Special Batchoy (with everything on it ) costs around 80 Pesos.    Deco’s is among the chains of batchoy restaurants in Ilo-ilo. Other chains have more branches , but I like Deco’s more for its taste.

20141103_061739

20141103_065159

Inside La Paz Market stands another Ilonggo staple , the Madge Coffee Shop serving Native Brewed Coffee. Don’t expect frappe on this old timer, as they only serve their original brew.Passed from one generation to the next, this coffee house still serves the original coffee concoction since 1951. A Cup of native brewed coffee costs 25 pesos. This is also worth a try =)

20141103_055321

While having coffee, its also nice to sample some delectable kakanins native to the Ilonggo province.

20141103_061402
Suman with Bukayo Topping . This is an ilonggo twist on the Pinoy staple sticky rice delicacy by adding sweetened coconut (buko) fillet . I never had such as this before back in Davao.
20141103_061314
Puto Gata, A Rice cake Delicacy. The maker used Coconut Milk instead of the usual milk. This is perfectly paired with Batchoy and Dinuguan ( pork blood stew )

The best part of my Ilo-ilo food trip was sampling their abundance on Oysters ! I dined at Samurai Restaurant, an affordable seafood and grill , very near to SM City.  A Platter of Oyster , cooked in three ways ( Ginger-steamed , buttered , and Chili Garlic ). A Platter with 16 pcs only cost me 130 pesos !  Thats how cheap Oysters are in Ilo 2x.

SAM_6747
Vegetables sauteed in Butter Garlic only costs 55 pesos . A Great Side dish.

SAM_6741

I only had a few hours to roam around and sample Ilo-ilo’s fine tummy fillers , as such , the limited sharing. But definitely, Ilo-ilo is worth a re-visit. Even just for those delectable Steamed Oysters ! =)

Transportation Ilo-ilo to Caticlan v.v.

Ilo-ilo to Caticlan (Boracay) and back is a smooth 6 hours by public “limited-stopped” bus.  Ceres Bus line takes this route on vice versa, One departing bus every hour from 3 AM  (first bus) to 6 PM ( last bus ) as of November 2014 , and costs around 350 Pesos per way , Air-conditioned .

Public Van transportation is also a usual option especially on night trips. But bus rides are recommended for safety .

Sumptuous Payday Buffet by Helen’s Kitchen

Hungry and curious on finding awesome restaurants in Davao, me and a friend Ar. Pen Tancio decided to check the P 499.00 payday buffet of Helen’s Kitchen, located along Buhangin Road, Davao City. Much to our expectation, what we had was a lavish heavy dinner, of more than 10 specialty dishes, tasty and worth every peso. =)

Korean Style Hotpot/Shabu-shabu at Bulgogi Brothers Ph

Last friday, a few Davao Blogger members were invited for food tasting and menu update of Bulgogi Brothers Phils. at SM Lanang, Davao City.

Famous in South Korea, Bulgogi Brothers is a casual dining restaurant chain specialized in Korean dishes and bulgogi ( marinated Korean barbecue ). As an added knowledge for everyone, The word “bul” means fire and “gogi” means meat, in Korean.

Bulgogi Brothers Philippines is the first franchise outside South Korea , which gained popularity on Filipino food enthusiasts with branches at Greenbelt 5, Alabang Town Center, Mall of Asia, Glorietta 2 in Manila, and SM Lanang in Davao.  Thats five aggressive branches in just a short span of time.

The recently launched Three way Shabu Shabu Set
The recently launched Bulgogi Brothers Phils. Three way Shabu Shabu Set

As an addition to the restaurant menu, Bulgogi Brothers Phils. introduces its Three-way Shabu shabu – Korean Style. Originated from East Asia ( Korea, Mongolia , China , Japan ) , Shabu-shabu is a traditional way of tabletop hot pot cooking where meat and vegetables are boiled in bubbling hot broth , seasoned with oriental flavors and spices.  Hot pots are always a fun dining experience with family and friends.

Bulgogi Brothers Phils.’ version of Shabu-shabu

Twisting from the traditional way of hot pots, Bulgogi Brother’s Three way Shabu-shabu is more than just the usual hot pot soup. The feast begins with the server pouring a tasty broth onto the pot, bringing it to a brisk simmer by cranking up the heat on the metal hot plate. Guests can savor the stew with an additional order of rice.

bulgogi brothers seafood set
Fresh mixed seafood Hot Spot : a plate of fresh and plump clams, blue crab, mussels and squid cooked over a spicy broth. A sureball winner among all Bulgogi Brothers Hot pot Set .

Next, a plate of Ramyun noodles arrives on the table. Because shabu-shabu encourages guests to be their own cook, they can toss the noodles together with the meat and other vegetables for a distinctly flavorful pot of Ramyun noodles.

Towards the end of the meal the server creates tasty rice porridge (juk) from the same shabu-shabu broth with Korean rice topped with seaweed, vegetables and egg for a truly filling meal.

For a unique flavor that’s suited to their liking, diners have the option to choose what meat goes into their hotpot. There’s Beef and Veggies, beef bulgogi on a garden of leeks, peppers, cabbage, bean sprouts and mushroom; Ham and Sausage, a marriage of American and Korean flavors with ham, sausage, cabbage, bean sprouts, mushroom and gochujang (Korean hot chili paste); and Mixed Seafood, a plate of fresh and plump clams, blue crab, mussels and squid cooked over a spicy broth.

Sumptuous Restaurant Menu by Garden Oases

Since the 90’s, Garden Oases Resort and Convention Center has always been a familiar venue for weddings and assemblies , with its accessible location, amenities and spacious lawns ideal for various occasions. And with the addition of its multi leveled Ritz Hotel just a few years back, Garden Oases has well maintained its niche as one of the top and most convenient places to stay here in Metro Davao.

Earlier today, i tagged along with a few friends for lunch and food tasting of their new food entries at Garden Oases’ Restaurant. We were catered by Garden Oases and Ritz Hotel’s PR Manager , Ms. Alice Cadao. It was quite an intimate gathering with just a few people invited, which gave us a chance to get to know the restaurant better. And indeed, there is definitely more to Garden Oases than just a Resort-Hotel , with all the sumptuous food entries served at their poolside restaurant.  Here are some of the recently added menu Entries with a twist , which I personally liked:

Best Meat Overloaded Pizza In Davao : Bu’s Tapas, Bebidas Y Bodega

Bu’s Tapas, Bebidas Y Bodega has been serving drinks along  Pelayo Street (Formerly Legaspi Street ) since 2013 , until recently I came across their  All meat overload Gourmet Pizza, and it blew me off at first bite ! Heavy with toppings of meat , cheddar, Capers , spices and imported sausage , served at 12 ” , good for 3-4  and is priced at P 250 – 300. How good is that?  As such , Bu’s Pizza is worthy of a recommendation; A personal favorite of mine these days =)

Dining with Style at Saging Repablik

Last thursday, a few members of Davao Bloggers’ Society were invited for food and dessert tasting at Saging Repablik , one of Davao’s newest , and possibly the most talked about restaurant these days.  Saging Repablik is located along Tiongko Ave. corner V Mapa St., a few blocks from Bangko Central. It would be impossible not to notice this two storey glass box building, fully lighted at night. The bold lighting , matte black signages and polished concrete finish gave its contemporary industrial look , which reminds me so much of  some restaurants I’ve visited in Singapore.

Saging Repablik opened its doors sometime around late June of this year. Barely three months old, people are still buzzing over this modern style restaurant serving specialty Asian/Filipino dishes , with a twist of Banana.  Saging Repablik is uniquely Davao Born. The restaurant’s concept was derived from Banana ( Saging in Filipino ), which Davao region is also famous for producing.  Aside from serving local dishes,  the restaurant also promotes local banana products such as flavored cavendish chips, as well as locally made chocolate products.

As a curious person, I admit that it wasn’t my first time to dine at Saging Repablik the time our Bloggers group was invited. Ive been to this place three times already for coffee and their Banana-Walnut Torte , which is probably one of the best Torte I had.  It is made up of layers of caramelized Banana, Chocolate, Walnut and Something like Sansrival , perfectly coated with chilled cream. I would say this Dessert alone, already makes Saging Repablik worthy of a visit. =)

Hongkong Style Dining at D’ Little Dynasty Kitchen

Tucked in a less crowdy corner of Plaza Del  Carmen Compound along Loyola St., DC, you’ll find a quaint restaurant  named ‘Little Dynasty Kitchen’ serving  hearty Chinese-asian fusion dishes. What’s charming about this place is that it reminds me much of dining at modest eateries in hongkong. With around 8 tables for 4, D Little Dynasty Kitchen is appropriate for small crowd, modest, and has an open kitchen where customers can see how their dimsums are prepared ; Typical with Hongkong street restaurants.
Dishes are mainly chinese and dimsum with singaporean fusion as they also serve Laksa and curry noodles.  Prices are just right, at around P 100-150 per person.
Here are some of the dishes I usually Order :

image

sweet and sour pork at around P 125/order with rice. Big serving!

image

pork Cuapao at around P 80/2 pcs

image

Braised beef at around P 130/order with rice

Meat Dumplings

Carmela’s Cheesy Ensaymada and etc. by Wency Cornejo

As recommended by some friends, I just picked up few boxes of Carmela’s pastries , personally baked by the ‘Wency Cornejo’.
Yes guys, he resides in Davao City at the moment and co – owns Krazy Kitch Bakeshop along Cabaguio. Wency named his pastries ‘Carmela’ after his mom, the Carmela ‘Mel’ Tiangco.
May star factor ba thats why I ordered ? I admit, Yes ! Haha I am a fan of Wency Ever since . But more to that, I also came across good reviews on his pastries. And with all honesty, the ensaymada is soft  and cheesy good . It is definitely love at first bite !

Best Hopia by Far : Jopoy’s from Digos

I’ve already tasted a lot of Hopia brands with different flavors ; But just recently , I was given a box of Jopoy’s  hopia from Digos City , and it blew me away at first bite. As such, this goodie foodie is worth a recommendation.

image

My fave would definitely be this one, filled with rich ube halaya (sweet yam) and pastillas (traditional Filipino sweet made of milk) at the center . I Purposely sliced a piece to half, to show its generous filling. Yum!!
Unlike the famous eng bee tin’s smooth finished hopia pieces, Jopoy’s dough is a traditional – flaky type, which I like better.
I liked this Hopia so much, it surpassed the famous eng bee tin and that hopia I had in Melacca, Malaysia.

Jopoy’s is located at Roxas Extension, Digos City.

Somewhere in Davao: Sana’s Kabawan Tapa and Bulalo

Ask me where to enjoy a very filling and affordable Bulalo in Davao… Sana’s Kabawan will always come first in my mind. Sure jud ko!

Tucked in the modest side of downtown Davao, Sana’s Carinderia has been serving locals for around three decades already. Though it may not be the most popular food destination today, foodies must have found something special on this humble eatery, that kept the business going for many years. One of Sana’s loyal diner is our current president PDDR. Saya, diba? Sana's Carinderia 002_1

Me with Ian Ray Garcia and Sana Valles at Sana’s.

Specialties :

Sana’s Special Bulalo ( stewed beef shanks and marrow in bone). Without any dapig dapig, this dish is one of the best tasting meat soup I know here in Davao.  Meat is of good quality , tender and cooked just right; and that fatty marrow we love is perfectly tucked in.  A big bowl of this is fairly priced at P 165.00 , good for 2.

Kalabaw (Ox) Meat Tapa . Shredded and very tasteful . A serving of this costs 80.00 per platito.  You can also order frozen packs of this for take away.

Ox Meat Tapa
Ox Meat Tapa

Stewed Ox Brain for the adventurous ! around 100.00 per serving.

Ox Brain Stew
Ox Brain Stew

Other Dishes that are also worthy to try : Kalabaw Hinalang. Chicken Adobo. Paksiw Tuna.  Sana’s generally serve Filipino dishes.

—0—

Price Range : Affordable and worth every peso.  Dishes are priced at P 40 to P 100 per serve. Bulalo soup is at P 165, good for sharing.

Taste  :  10/10  . The Shedded Tapa is something I can eat everyday ! Really Tasty. And their bulalo is one of the best tasting there is in Davao.

Place :  Just an ordinary eatery. Don’t expect anything fancy. It’s a Carinderia anyways. Cleanliness, however, has always been observed. Utensils are sterilised.

Best time to go: The place is usually packed during lunch break. As tourists, breakfast or early lunch is a good idea.

Service : 10/10  ( Nice staff. Owner came to have a short chat. )

Opens at 7 AM  until late lunch. Mondays to Saturdays, except holidays.=)

Location :

Sana's Kabawan along J. Luna Street , corner Quezon Blvd. Near Luz Kinilaw. Piapi Area. just ask the locals of you cant find it.

Food Trip in Delhi ( And how much it costs! )

Must Try Affordable Restaurants in Delhi

Food is fairly cheap in India, as compared to other Cities Ive visited , including Metro Manila. For the tight budgeted , food allowance of 400 INR/day ( 7-8 USD ) is enough , but will most likely limit you with basic and street food. Below are most of the affordable restaurants I’ve tried, with its corresponding price range, to give you an idea how much food costs in Delhi ,( and  similarly with other cities in India I ve visited ).

Odiya Hotel near New Delhi Railway Station . Main Bazaar . Price range 80 – 150 INR ( 1-3 usd )

Odiya Hotel is in fact an eatery, and not a hotel. Theres a lot of this in India. and I wonder why they always use "hotel" instead of Restaurant.

For the Meat Lovers,  I highly recommend trying Stewed Lamb at Bhape da Hotel, in  Connaught Place , Delhi .  Just google the walking direction from Rajiv Chowk Train Station . Not the cheapest option,  with price ranging at 200 – 300 INR ( 4-5 usd) , but food is really good !   This restaurant is also recommended by migrationology.com as among his fave street food worthy of travel.

The Bhape da Hotel Restaurant , mentioned by Migrationology.com as on of his fave Indian Eatery. Stewed Lamb was super Delicious

Café Hopping in Hongdae, Seoul

Probably one of the best time I had in Seoul was the chillax  “No Particular Go See” day. We woke up a bit late and just  spent the morning in our backpackers’ lounge to chit chat with other guests. In the afternoon, we went strolling on Seoul’s university belt near Hongdae , which also has a lot of bookstores, quaint shops and boutiques. The afternoon ended up into a Cafe Hopping experience.

Koreans are quite fancy with their Coffee and pastries . Interiors are fun, tastefully embellished and usually interactive , as there are corners and boards where you can post your sketches and thoughts or anything that comes in mind to leave something by.

Here are some of the quirky Cafe’s we’ve visited in Hongdae , and all over Seoul .

Coffee Prince , Hongdae –  where the Kpop TV Series was shot , famous to Filipinos and other Asians.  A bit pricey around 4.5 USD per cup, but its worth the money for Yoon Eun-hye fan like me. haha . Coffee was so-so. Cheescake was great. Ambiance was awesome !

Cats Living Here Cafe, just a stone throw away from Hello Kitty Cafe  .  The whole loft is a play pen for cats and is heaven for Cat lovers . This place is actually a foster home for cats, and customers can also bring with them their loves to play and socialize with other cats, which is cool ! Truly, the korean owner is doing this out of passion =)    Entrance fee to the loft is 8000 won (around 7 USD , and that includes a fix ).  My friends were not into cats so they had to leave me here for an hour while they go shop hopping.

Eat Korean Food like an Emperor

Probably the largest share of expense during my travel to Seoul went to satisfy my tastebuds and fill my tummy. Personally , I believe that it’s ok to spend a little extra on food; After all, its not like every month, you are in Seoul to enjoy real authentic Korean cooking.
