Take Me Back Balabac: A Travel Guide 2018

With the clearest turquoise water and unspoilt shores, Balabac is one of the less visited destinations in the Philippines that deserves a spot on top of your travel bucket list. Here’s a quickie blog with nitty gritty details on how I reached the Balabac Group of Islands. But first, a little information muna about the place.

Balabac is a 2nd class municipality situated at the southwestern tip of Palawan province. Surrounded by the rich water of Sulu Sea, Balabac is a group of 31 islands and islets blessed with unspoiled fine sand beaches, wide sandbars and rich marine life. As per record, there are only about 40,000 inhabitants scattered around the islands. The province got much of its recent popularity after being featured by GMA’s Jessica Soho. As the show mentioned, this group of islands is our country’s last of the last frontier.

Balabac is only 8 hours away by boat to Malaysia. Kaya expect nalang that Malaysian products are a common thing in this very small province. Some locals do back door (paperless) entry to Malaysia, but as a responsible Filipino citizen, please do not consider doing that. No, no, no.

How to Get to Balabac – DIY Style

The municipality of Rio Tuba is the known gateway/commercial port with public boats traveling daily to Balabac main island where most of the community is located.

Puerto Princesa City — 6 hours –> Rio Tuba by bus + Rio Tuba — 3 to 4 hours –>Mainland Balabac by boat.

Public buses leave Puerto Princesa City (Palawan) from San Jose Terminal starting at 4AM. Fare is at P275++ for non-aircon bus and P450++ for aircon shuttle or bus, travel time is approximately six (6) hours.

From Rio Tuba, A public boat departs daily at around noon to mainland Balabac. Travel time is approximately four (4) hours and fare is P450 one-way. Please note that there is no fixed schedule of boat departure as it depends on sea condition and passenger traffic. Best to be at Rio Tuba as early as 10AM. You may also opt to stay overnight at Rio Tuba town. Basic pension houses at P 300-500/room can accommodate you.

Balabac Main Island Accommodation As recommended by a friend, JD lodging: (0910 662 0073) at P400 per night for 2 pax.

DIY Island Hopping from Balabac Mainland. To go around the sub islands, the only mode of transport is by boat. There are no public boats that go from island to island since most locals here own their own motorised boats. Chartering a small boat (4 pax-6 pax) from the locals usually starts at P5000 per day. Lodging houses can recommend this to you.

If you intend to stay outside of mainland Balabac, expect to homestay or with guided camping for a fee. It is advised that you pass by the municipality tourism desk upon arrival and have yourself registered. Small amount may be imposed to visitors in the coming months, as Balabac Tourism Board is already being put up at the moment.

Budget for 4 days 3 nights? Probably around P 7,000 to 9,000, assuming you’d share the boat rentals with 4 -6 pax.

Pre-arranged Tour Style – I Prefer this!

Considering its isolated location and limited facility, Balabac is relatively new to the tourism industry. Tourism standards are yet to be formalised. For convenience, as well as safety, I HIGHLY recommend joining pre-arranged tour to take you around the islands. A number of independent tour providers offer “island camping” packages with rides, insurance and on board meals for P 10,000 to P 12,500, 4 days, three nights. Check out Biyahe ni Josemanuel on facebook for recommendations.

What to Expect. As a relatively isolated destination, do not expect fancy accommodations and the comforts you’d find in Boracay. Balabac is more on the rough side for the adventure seekers. Clearly, it is not a destination for everybody at the moment. In addition, there are no ATMs in the Island. Bring enough cash with you; preferably small bills.

Best Time to Visit. Summer . March to May when the sky is clear and the water is calm. Imagine island hopping with a nagbabadyang typhoon…. rainy season is a no, no!

Safety. Security concerns have been raised in the past, particularly on foreign travelers (you may google these issues). As such, joining a pre-arranged group tour an advantage for safety and monitoring.

The importance of Insect Repellent Lotion. Some of the stops during the island hop have lots of mosquito and sand fleas. More to that, some parts of Balabac experienced Malaria scare last December 2017. As a precaution, bring your off lotion everywhere you go. Sleeved tops and long pants are also recommended, especially at night.

Mobile Networks. Mobile networks were said to be moderate 2G on the mainland, but most of the islands have none. Prepare to disconnect with your social media hang ups.

Toilet and Water Supply. When camping, expect the most basic toilet there is. Deep well freshwater on the islands is very limited. As such, limit your flush and bathing requirements to the minimum.

Electricity. Electricity at the mainland is said to be up to 12 midnight only. For island camping, solar power is utilised to supply only basic light and gadget charging between 6 to 10 PM.

Snorkeling. Balabac offers the best snorkling sites I’ve visited to date. You can clearly see the corals from the boat as the water is super clear and calm, hindi mo na kailangan bumaba. As a safety reminder, never do snorkeling on shallow water. Only do this when the reefs are ideally 3.0 meters away from you.

Kill nothing but time. Leave nothing but footprints. Take nothing but pictures. Keep nothing but memories.

Biyaheng Pinas:Kawa Hot Bath In Tibiao, Antique

Here’s a vlog on my quickie overnight side trip to Tibiao,Antique. The small town famous for the kawa hot bath is 2 to 2.5 hours away by bus from Kalibo City. Bus leaves every hour between 7AM to 2PM. Schedules are posted on Ceres Bus Line Website.

From Kalibo City (Ceres Terminal) take the bus to” San Jose,Antique”. Inform the conductor ahead of time that you are bound for Tibiao. All vans and buses of this route pass though Tibiao Town. You have a choice to alight at Tibiao Town Center, or at the crossing of Brgy Importante, which is a stop just before Tibiao town proper. Bus ride costs 150 Pesos per way.

The Kawa Hot Bath places are located up the hills and rice paddles of Brgy Importante. To get there, take a motorcycle habal habal for 80 to 100 Pesos per way. 20 to 30 minutes travel time. Tibiao is a pretty small town that is very easy to navigate. Locals are also very much willing to assist you on securing your rides. No sweat.

Going up the hills, expect to pay 50 Pesos Tourism fee at a booth. They provide Official Receipt for that. No worries.

At the moment, there are 4 places up the mountains that provide accommodation, full board meals and hot baths. There’s on resort that can be booked through Agoda, but through referrals, I opted to stay at La Escapo Lodge, Owned by the Barangay Captain of the place. Stay details are on my vlog attached.

Overnight Kubo Room (Fan Type) : 250/ pax

Hot Bath : 200/pax

Food (Paluto Style): 70 to 100 per set meal. Bringing of Baon is also allowed.

Other activities : Caving, Kayaking, rafting, rice paddle trekking with kids as guides (like 7 years old. lels)

At the moment, expect to have very unstable to no Network Signal. No Data. No Wifi. Good luck sa inyo mga bes. However, a visit to Tibiao is definitely a great opportunity to have some long overdue quiet time; A Place for retreat. A chance to reconnect with you inner thoughts. An inspirational book plus hot coffee will be a good idea.

The place is super green, super fresh smelling and soothing cool with drizzling rain from time to time. The accommodation huts are just up the stream so sobrang sarap matulog talaga hearing the water flow down and crash against the river rocks.

Definitely going back there soon.

Where I stayed : La Escapo Lodge and Hot Bath, owned by the family of Miss Yolly Amar. Get in touch with them though facebook.

Biyaheng Pinas:Backpacking Capiz and Isla de Gigantes Sample Itinerary

Here’s a quick recap vlog on how I spent one fine weekend backpacking Capiz and Isla de Gigantes. I flew in via Airasia’s direct Davao-Kalibo flight. Kalibo to Roxas City,Capiz is merely 1.5 hours away by van.
Capiz and Isla de Gigantes are two awesome alternative destinations accessible from Kalibo (in case Boracay is already a cliche).

Getting around tips:

Kalibo City to Roxas City, Capiz

From Kalibo Airport, walk towards the highway, which is merely 60 meters away. Tricycle rides from the highway to anywhere in downtown Kalibo is only 10 Pesos. Super cheap as compared to the chartered tricycles directly outside the arrival area (minimum 100 Pesos). Upon exiting the airport, don’t forget to try the Aklan Style Suman with Latik. To die for super yummy. Tradition ko tlga kumain nito upon arrival and before I leave.

Van terminal from Kalibo to Roxas City (Capiz) is located at the front of Citymall. 5 am to 7pm. 120 Pesos. 1.5 hours travel time.  Vans and buses alight at Pueblo de Panay Central Terminal in Roxas City.

A Platter of Steamed Talaba for only 35 Pesos at Baybay food park, Roxas City

Where to Stay in Roxas City : Beehive Inn. 400 Pesos Fan room with private bathroom and wifi.  Inn is located fronting CAP building; walking distance from public market. Roxas is very easy to navigate. Tricycles are the primary transpo. 10 to 15 Pesos fare.

Roxas City, Capiz to Isla de Gigantes

From Pueblo de Panay Terminal, hop on a Van with “ESTANCIA” Route, but you’re not going to Estancia. Let the driver know you are on your way to Isla de Gigantes so he can drop you off at BALASAN.  65 Pesos per way. One Hour travel. Balasan town is relatively populated. Nothing to be scared of.

From Balasan, hire a motorcycle habal-habal to Bancal Port (or just let the driver know you’re on your way to Isla de Gigantes.)   100 Pesos max to get there.

Bus ride is also doable but is a bit complicated.

Chartering a van from Roxas City is around 3000 to 5000 Pesos. The easiest way ever!

If given some time in Balasan, don’t forget to try their local bibinka. Super small and cute, like around 3 inches diameter lang. pero super yummy. like may buko strips inside and crystalized sugar on top.

I pre-booked my day tour to Gigantes group of islands with Paul Bolivar of Gigantes island Tours and Services. Get in touch with them through Facebook. Package tour is at 999 Pesos with hefty Lunch (off peak price). Overnight packages are also available.

Here are some of the dishes served during our lunch. PANALO!!!

Backpacking Iceland On A Cheap (Things to do,where to stay and stuff)

When visiting Iceland with a limited time only, here are some must sees and must do activities that should never be missed.

  1. Golden Circle Tour. This is a whole day activity that takes you around Iceland’s famous natural landscapes. I booked mine with Reykjavik Excursions for 10,400 Isk (4,500 Pesos). Yep, the package might sound pricey, but I did not have much choice, as there are no public transportation in Iceland that goes to the specified destinations. It would have been cheaper also if I tapped with fellow travellers and just share on a rented car, but I did not find any on my scheduled date. So, there. Nonetheless, the guided tour by Reykjavik Excursions was quite relaxed and we were not really rushed to complete things; which is good. Tip: Wear something waterproof jacket and pants when going around Iceland, as the weather can be quite unpredictable with recurring rain and strong wind, especially on the mountainous areas, to which is what this tour is all about.

2)Blue Lagoon Tour. Blue Lagoon geothermal spa is one of the most visited attractions in Iceland. The spa is located in a lava rock field in southwestern Iceland, thus the naturally black ground. The somewhat milky coloured of the water is a natural thing that is a result of the Silica-mineral rich ground of the lagoon. Warm water dun at around 39 degrees Celcius. It was raining heavily when I went there, and was super cold if you are not in the water. Nonetheless, the experience was great! 10,700 Isk (4,600 Pesos)

3)Northern Light Tour.  Now here’s the tricky part, kasi the Nothern Lights are a natural phenomenon that is very much dependent on weather conditions. Experiencing this can never be assured. I myself waited for 4 nights, and wasn’t lucky enough to witness it. The whole Iceland was cloudy and rainy when I went there. 6,400 Isk (2,800 Pesos) for a light chase tour. Fully refundable if weather was awful during your stay.

4)Citywalk Reykjavik. This is a free tour that you can sign up with on the internet (Citywalk.Is). It is a 2 hours walking tour around the city that fully depends on donations. Any amount will be accepted after the tour. This one is a good activity especially for backpackers. Definitely a good venue to meet fellow travellers.

reykjavik62
Reykjavik is actually a very artsy city with a fun vibe. You get to see a lot of interesting around. Here’s one example.

Hallgrímskirkja Church is another iconic must see in Reykjavik. This contemporary-themed catholic church may be odd looking outside, but inside has very clean and crisp art and accents. It is the only church I’ve visited so far that has somewhat a minimalist feel on its interior spaces. Visiting this could easily be fitted after the Citywalk tour. Entrance is free.

5)Harpa Concert Hall and the surrounding port is another must visit icon of Reykjavik. Visitors can marvel on the amazing contemporary interiors of this post-modern glass box building. Imagine when the Northern lights are up and this glass building reflects all the activities of the sky. Surreal siguro un. No entrance fees on this as well.  The surrounding port is also worth a walk and probably have dine-ins there.

Food. Given naman na food in Iceland is expensive. Almost everything is imported, if not grown in a greenhouse. Though pricey, the portions naman are relatively big. Just to give you guys an idea, the cheapest that you can find along the street are hotdog sandwiches, for 450 Isk ( 180 Php/3-4 Usd), but it’s big na, like almost a foot long. Sample in the photo is Baejarins Beztu Pylsur, the famous Hotdog stand na masarap ung sauce and may crunchy fried onion bits sa bottom ng bun.

Iceland people are fond of vegetarian menus din. As I’ve observed, almost always may vegetarian option sa menus. Vegetarian sandwiches are great on breakfast for 450 Isk ( 180 Php/3-4 Usd) . Basic black coffee is also around 450 Isk ( 180 Php/3-4 Usd) reykjavik14

Average-priced dine ins are at around 900 to 1,800 Isk (400 to 800 pesos). Bottomline, mahal ang dine-in sa Iceland because of labor and taxes.  Here are a few snapshots.

Kung gusto makamura, grocery! And particularly sa Bonus Supermarket near the port or the BSI Bus terminal. Ito yung baon ko when I went to the Golden Circle Tour. hehe

20161004_184235
You can also find cheap ready to eat at groceries. One Whole chicken only costs 1,499 Isk (650 pesos)

Accommodation. There’s not much choices on hostels in Reykjavik. The best na nahanap ko is Oddsson Hotel/Hostel, which is it at 10-15 minutes walk from the Port, and a little more from the city center. Waterfront ang Oddsson, so maganda ang view, and sobrang lamig talaga. May “Vida Express”Grocery at the front, and a little further, there’s “Bonus Supermarket”where the locals go. The hostel has a big kitchen and a balcony, with a heated jacuzzi pa. One night is around 1,500.00 Pesos, towel use excluded. reykjavik1214971638_10210521812582889_538648521_oreykjavik13reykjavik89

Airport Transfer. There is no train facility in Iceland, so the next best and secure option is by bus. Though minimal ang difference with others, the cheapest option is with Grayline Airport Express, and get the roundtrip (Airport-Reykjavik-Airport) package of around 4,000.00 Isk (Php 1,760.00, pwedeng sa website nila, or at the airport na by cash or credit card). For some reason, di ko naisip kunin ang round trip kaya napamahal ako.

Iceland was part of the 10 days Backpacking trip in Scandinavia. For the overall budgeting part, refer to this article : https://iamjosemanuel.com/2016/11/05/backpacking-scandinavia-10-days-in-swedennorway-and-iceland-magkano-ba/

12 Things To Expect in Iceland (Kung Alam Ko Lang!)

Iceland. Wala na akong masabi kasi probably madami na kayong alam na facts and figures about this dream destination. Anyways, here are some things that I’ve learned from my visit, and some personal realizations that could have made my short trip better. Sa mga nagbabalak pumunta, sana may mapulot kyo dito.

  1. TRIVIA: 10% nalang ng Iceland is covered with Glacier/Ice due to climate change. Lumalawak din naman to pag winter pero topical lang and is expected to be washed out by change of season. When I went there, only few snow-capped mountains can be seen from afar.
  2. THE SAD PART: Iceland is majorly a cold-barren land, with large portion of it covered by volcanic rocks, making farming and vegetation close to impossible (which justifies why mahal ang pagkain dun. I swear, naka greenhouse sila even for tomatoes). There are minimal trees left, naubos na ng occupants during the early days, and later did they realise na they cannot regrow trees easily. reykjavik36reykjavik26
  3. MAN AGAINST ELEMENT: Sobrang unpredictable ng Iceland’s wind and weather all year round. It was autumn when I went. Though the temperature is manageable at around 6-10 degrees C, it is the strong, piercing wind that challenges all living things. chot! Seriously, super strong wind expecially sa mountainous parts, some can actually tilt up to 70 degrees and not fall.
  4. UNEXPECTED ACTIVITY: Iceland is a volcanic island. Don’t be surprised with recurring mini earthquakes almost everyday. Thus, madaming hot springs and thermal pools dun that local people enjoy, kahit within the city lang. Point is, bring your SWIMMING Outfit dahil mapapasabak ka talaga sa dipping. I swear naka boxer brief lang ako when I went to Blue Lagoon. Nilaban ko lang with Davao City-level of confidence. Sabi nga ng Indonesian friend ko, “That is very Filipino”.
  5. OUTFIT: Given the weather unpredictability of this country, WATERPROOF COAT AND PANTS are a MUST! Yun ang kulang ko. I did not research good enough before I left. High cut shoes is also recommended, and preferably leather.  Gloves and Ear muffs are recommended. Gloves, ideally the leather one with removable tips for easy camera use.
  6. SKIN CARE: the cold can at times be more harsh than the heat. Bring moisturiser and lip balm. Don’t neglect your lips. Una yan dudugo.
  7. UPON ARRIVAL: Walang train ang Iceland. Either you go by bus or pasundo ka sa daddy mo. And when you go by bus, whatever the company is, BUY ROUND TRIP pag early morning ang flight mo out of Iceland. Wag matigas ulo.
  8. FOOD: Syempre kailangan nyo din ma experience dining in at Reykjavik. There’s Sjavarbarinn and Messin, among other mid priced restaurants in the city. But if trip nyo mag grocery para maka mura, go to the port, and malapit dun, there’s Bonus Supermarket. Don’t buy from convenient stores. Mahal.
  9. CULTURED PEOPLE: Guys, walang Mcdonald’s sa Iceland. FYI Norman.
  10. GENERAL TIP: Hydrate! Hydrate! Hydrate! and for free!!! Potable water in Iceland is clean enough to drink; The whole of Scandinavia actually.
  11. PASALUBONG: When buying foodie pasalubongs, buy at the airport na before departing. Particularly the local chocolates in Duty Free are like almost 50% cheaper than in Reykjavik’s. Mataas kasi taxes ng city. And I swear, Icelandic chocolates are to die for. In the airport, you can actually buy Salmon meat and other meat products and even Icelandic breads pastries with proper travel packaging. Bsta, iba ang Airport dun in terms of items to buy. Bili din kayo nung Smoked Cod Liver na delata. Masarap pang appetizer. Cheaper din sa airport.
  12. EMOTIONAL PREPARATION: Lastly, prepare yourself sa feeling na seeing the Northern Light is just a bonus in life and a blessing from the Lord Almighty. As it is a natural phenomenon dependent on the weather, not everyone gets to experience them. Personally, I did not see it even though I waited for 4 nights. What hurts is that I was just late by a weekend, kasi days before daw, the light was super strong that you can see them even from the city. Ohw, well, I can just revisit for that someday. And tours for the Northern Light are usually fully refundable when you don’t get to see them. September to March daw ang strong sightings of this elusive show. So book your tickets between those months and magpa-Novena kayo sa mga taga Dona Pilar Village of Davao for good weather.

Backpacking Scandinavia (10 Days in Sweden,Norway & Iceland. Magkano ba?)

It’s no secret that the Scandinavian countries of Europe are among the most expensive countries in the world to visit; especially when you are coming from the Philippines. Sobrang layo na nun, beh. You can already breathe in the cold air from the north pole, at di mo na ramdam yung equator from there. Chot! Intimidating puntahan? Medyo siguro at first. Posibleng nakakatakot yung gasto? Pag demanding ka,definitely. Pag mababa naman standards mo sa pagbabakasyon, carry na yun. Para sa mga pusang gala tulad ko, lahat naman pwedeng gawan ng paraan para makamura.

Scandinavia as a backpacking destination? kayang kaya!geysir-2016-iamjosemanuelreykjavik25

Sa mga nagtatanong lang, Scandinavian peninsula covers the Northern region of Europe. Sali dito ang Kingdoms of Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland. May ibang articles din na sinasali ung Greenland. Kung meron man akong na miss-out, then sumbong nyo lang sa barangay.

Sa article na to, I will be discussing how to budget a 10-days backpacking trip across Stockholm(Sweden), Oslo(Norway), and lastly, Iceland, which was really the purpose of my trip. Lalatag ko na secret formulas ko sa planning ha? Wag kayong ano jan.

How I booked my flights.  To be honest, wala sa plano ko magbackpacking ng Europe this year. Gasto beh. Nag iipon sana ako pambili ng pag-ibig. Chot. Pero seriously, all these only started when I encountered a super-sale ticket with Norwegian Airline last Feb 2016. It only costs around Php 18,000.00 roundtrip Bangkok to Stockholm, then Oslo back to Bangkok. This Round trip ticket is already too good to miss. (Hello Europe yan, nasa 40k to 50k ang regular nyan.) Pero ang catch kung bakit sobrang mura? 1) No check-in baggage, and 2) No food included. If I added food, + Php 5,000.00. Pero sa totoo lang, hindi yun issue sa akin. Sanay ako magbaon, at di naman yun bawal sa plane (basta wag lang masabaw o beyond 100ml ang sarsa ng afritada mo). Sandwiches,Pizza slices, apple, pears, etc.. ok na un for an 11 hours ride, and usually may pabenta tlga nito sa mga airports abroad. Tsaka, matutulog ka lang din naman mostly. Aside sa binili kong mineral water dun sa departure hall, may dala ako water bottle. Refill ko lang before departure. And also in flight, pwede naman humingi ng tubig.

stockholm2
Ito yung baon ko nung papuntang Stockholm.  2 sandwiches. 2 apples, nuts, chocolates

Yung flight from Manila to Bangkok and back,I did not worry so much kasi madalas naman un sale with Cebu Pacific.

As proof, here are my tickets.bkk-to-stockholm-iamjosemanuelolso-to-bangkok-iamjosemanuelFrom Stockholm, relatively affordable na lang ang plane tickets to Iceland. Salamat sa skyscanner.com to help travellers book a good deal.  Ito ang pasample kung pano ako mag hanap ng cheap. Though the screenshots below are not the exact flights that I got into last month, the concept of finding tickets is the same. For the purpose of costing, I will be using the values given below as reference.

How I applied for  Tourist Visa and other requirements. Here’s a reference to check. https://iamjosemanuel.com/2015/06/16/applying-schengen-visa-through-the-netherlands-embassy-in-the-philippines/

Airport Transfers when you get there. Mahalagang factor din ang pagcocommute from the airport to the city, because unlike NAIA, malalayo tlga airports nila dun; Say around 1 hour travel pa. As I’ve read, mas logical pa din if you choose public bus over train. Though the public(regional) trains are some pesos cheaper, it might require transfers pa, which would be a hassle. Maliban sa Reykjavik, All my airport transfers were settled at the airport na upon arrival. May wifi naman so you can connect and purchase online. Cheaper that way. Will discuss more of his as soon as I blog for the individual cities nah.

THE ESTIMATED COST. 10 DAYS, 3 SCANDINAVIAN CITIES. Ito po yung inabot ng gasto ko.iamjosemanuel-scandinavia-airfare-etcIto naman ung Itinerary that I followed when I was in Stockholm,Oslo and Reykjavik. Maliban sa Northern Light tour ng Reykjavik (see  https://iamjosemanuel.com/2016/11/06/backpacking-iceland-on-a-cheap-things-to-dowhere-to-stay-and-stuff/ ), everything on the list is based on my personal experience and budgeting.

Overall Summary of Costscreen-shot-2016-11-06-at-10-26-30-am

ASSESSMENT.

  • Yes po, Scandinavia definitely isn’t the cheapest backpacking destination. Pero beh, Iceland pinunta ko dun, at lahat ng pinaghandaan kong budget was worth all the feels. Sobrang ganda. Incomparable. Kaya nga sinadya kong maging relax ang pace ko when I was there, kasi di tayo basta bastang makaka balik dun.
  • Kung gusto nyo  makarami ng European countries na pupuntahan with relatively the same cost as above, then choose the cluster of countries near France.
  • My spending could have been cheaper by say 20%, if I tapped with couchsurfing. Kaso with the limited time, at malalayo from the city yun hosts, mas pinili ko nalang mag hostel/dorm within, o that is walkable from the city center, nang makarami. The 1200-1500 Pesos per night is not bad na actually for a dorm bed. May standard naman na sinusunod ang Europe to provide accommodations. Sa magtatanong, Couchsurfing is like an organization ng backpackers,na pwede kang makitira o mai-host sa destination mo. Google nyo lang.
  • On going around Iceland, some backpackers tend to just rent a car and share the fee and gas. Mas makaka mura kyo sa ganun if ever. However, I opt to join na a group tour, particularly with Reykjavik Excursions for my Golden Circle Tour, kasi nakaka tuwa din naman ung ma brief ka with the country’s history (and intrigues). =)
  • All my hostels/Dorms have been prebooked with Agoda.com and Hostelworld.com
  • Sa pagkain naman, nagtipid ako, pero definitely di ko ginutom sarili ko noh. Masaya naman ako kumain sa mga street food at average diners lang. OK na ako dun. Cguro sa bawat destination, I only allow myself 1-3 above average priced meals. Lalo na sa Iceland, nag grocery ako dun sa “Bonus” supermarket.
  • Di ako masyado nag museum during the trip. Mas ok ako sa city tour tlga than museums. Sa Oslo lang ako pumasok at Astrup Fearnley.
  • No shopping policy applied. Di ako pumasok sa H&M kahit alam kong may sale. haha. Kapagod din mag dala pauwi. Wala pa nmn ako check in baggage.

Sana naman ay may maicontribute ang post ko sa mga nagbabalak mag backpacking ng Scandinavia. Though there were cheaper options, my ways and means for this trip had been rather practical, than just going for the cheapest.  Feel free to pattern your preparations with mine. Better yet, improve it. =) Will share a more detailed for each city, on a separate blog posts to follow. stockholm-2016-iamjosemanuel

Biyaheng Pinas : Stop-over Foodtrip in Ilo-ilo City

For Davaoeno’s , landing on Ilo-ilo City Airport would most likely be the easy, yet practical entry point to any of the provinces in Panay , and most particularly to Caticlan(Boracay Island). There are still no direct commercial flights from Mindanao to Caticlan and vice versa, at the moment, connecting flights from Davao through Manila then Caticlan (Boracay Island) would be too expensive.

Charming and rich, Ilo-ilo is not just a monotonous city for a short stop over . Boasting its affluent Ilonggo history, as well as its abundance with oysters, shellfish and other seafood, I say this city is also worthy of a leisurely visit for a day or two.

On my most recent visit to Boracay, I had a bonus chance to spend an overnight in Ilo-ilo before leaving for Negros the following day. Tired and time restraint, I opted to skip the usual historic tour. But I made sure to check on this city’s food scene, which should never be missed ! Here are some of the food trips I had around Ilo-ilo 🙂

First Stop, Lapaz Batchoy from the Original Branch of Deco’s at Lapaz Public Market, which has been serving this staple Ilonggo tummy warmer prior to WW2. ( 1936, as told to me by the staff) .  This Super Special Batchoy (with everything on it ) costs around 80 Pesos.    Deco’s is among the chains of batchoy restaurants in Ilo-ilo. Other chains have more branches , but I like Deco’s more for its taste.

Inside La Paz Market stands another Ilonggo staple , the Madge Coffee Shop serving Native Brewed Coffee. Don’t expect frappe on this old timer, as they only serve their original brew.Passed from one generation to the next, this coffee house still serves the original coffee concoction since 1951. A Cup of native brewed coffee costs 25 pesos. This is also worth a try =)

While having coffee, its also nice to sample some delectable kakanins native to the Ilonggo province.

The best part of my Ilo-ilo food trip was sampling their abundance on Oysters ! I dined at Samurai Restaurant, an affordable seafood and grill , very near to SM City.  A Platter of Oyster , cooked in three ways ( Ginger-steamed , buttered , and Chili Garlic ). A Platter with 16 pcs only cost me 130 pesos !  Thats how cheap Oysters are in Ilo 2x.

I only had a few hours to roam around and sample Ilo-ilo’s fine tummy fillers , as such , the limited sharing. But definitely, Ilo-ilo is worth a re-visit. Even just for those delectable Steamed Oysters ! =)

Transportation Ilo-ilo to Caticlan v.v.

Ilo-ilo to Caticlan (Boracay) and back is a smooth 6 hours by public “limited-stopped” bus.  Ceres Bus line takes this route on vice versa, One departing bus every hour from 3 AM  (first bus) to 6 PM ( last bus ) as of November 2014 , and costs around 350 Pesos per way , Air-conditioned .

Public Van transportation is also a usual option especially on night trips. But bus rides are recommended for safety .

Biyaheng Pinas : Laoag and Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte

From Vigan, I headed further up north to Laoag and lazily roamed around the city and nearby towns for 2 days. Laoag is 2 hours away from Vigan, and around 9 to 10 hours away from Metro Manila , both by public bus. There are comfortable buses  that travel by night from Manila to Laoag , as well as the other way around , which I think is fairly ideal to do for budget conscious travelers, because it saves you a night stay at the hotel. Farinas Bus and Partas Bus leaves pasay on a scheduled trip.

I will be uploading a separate detailed post on recommended Ilocos backpacking budget , but for now , here are some of the highlights and the must do’s, inspired by my recent visit to Ilocos Norte:

BANGUI WINDMILLS

Visit Bangui Windmills in the Morning . The Windmill complex is an iconic landmark of Ilocos province’s progressive state . Bangui is around an hour bus from Laoag City .

20141028_100747
Bangui Wind Farm is a wind farm in Bangui, Ilocos Norte. You probably saw this on several Philippine tourism Ads , such as the “Biyahe Tayo” of Regine Velasquez from few years back. With 20 units wind turbines of 70-metre high, Bangui windmills Asia’s largest wind farm today, making Bangui the capital of green energy in the Philippines

Head further up north and spend lazy afternoon at Pagudpud Beach . This is another hour away from Bangui by bus + tricycle.

Lazy around the grounds and gardens of the Majestic Paoay Church , Preferably late afternoon, or ’til sun down, if you wish; Paoay is just 30-45 minutes away from  Laoag by public jeepney. A Unesco World Heritage Site, this is probably the most photogenic church I have ever visited. It is also where the Filipino/ Thai movie “Suddenly Its Magic” was shot .

From Paoay, it is also just one tricycle ride away to the Malacanang of the North, a Pride of the Marcos Regime .

Biyaheng Pinas : Vigan, Ilocos Sur

Known for its Filipino old world charm,  the City of Vigan has already become one of the most desired local tourist spot to visit here in the Philippines. A recognized Unesco World Heritage treasure, strolling around the old city’s cobblestone pavements and  well preserved Spanish Era Architecture is such a nostalgic experience, giving visitors a feel of how days and nights were during the old days. In addition to that, Vigan is also the destination to enjoy authentic Ilocano cuisine , with restaurants and street side eateries serving Vigan longganisa, bagnet and empanada , to name a few specialties.  In all honesty, Vigan is indeed a must visit for Filipinos; A “must experience”, at least once in our lives.

vigan

Vigan is a relatively small city around 8 hours away from Metro Manila by Bus. I stayed there for 2 days before heading to Laoag, which is around 2 hours further up North. With no particular and strict itinerary, I lazily roamed around the city by myself and spent late afternoon sipping coffee along Calle Crisologo. Travel is best spent when you really don’t have to rush time to see everything there is. A lazy walk on streets and local markets gives us travelers better chance to experience the vibe of the place more. =)

I will be uploading a separate post on recommended Ilocos backpacking budget , but for now , here are some of the highlights and the must do’s, inspired by my recent visit to Vigan:

Exploring the Famous Calle Crisologo – the center and the most well preserved part of Vigan’s Unesco World Heritage Protected Area

Museum Visits and roaming around the rest of Vigan City Center on Foot. The city is relatively small and easy to navigate. However, the most interesting mode to see Vigan is on a Kalesa ( Horse Drawn Carriage ). The Kucheros are much willing to be a guide for P 150 per hour . Renting a bike is also a cute idea , any hotel can assist you on where to get one =)

SAM_6396
The tower at the center Plaza Salcedo is somewhat historic , as this has been used to publicly execute criminals and rebels during the Spanish Era ; Gabriela Silang was among them. Today , this tower has become the centerpiece of the lively fountain park of the Plaza.

Visit nearby town of Bantay to see the Old Church and Bell Tower. Bantay is just around 10 minutes tricycle ride from Calle Crisologo .  I even managed to just walk from Bantay Church all the way back to Calle Crisologo for around 30 minutes. That was a leisurely late afternoon walk , and I got to cross the bridge on foot . =)

It also comes with a sunny side up on top. A nice garden restaurant just outside Bantay Church serves such good noodle dish for only 60 to 65 pesos.

Quest to find the best Vigan Empanada ( .. Or just my humble excuse to eat more empanada. haha ) Vigan Empanada is famous for its staple ilocano style filling of seasoned Vigan Longanisa (skinned) carrots, cabbage , and whole egg. I tried several empanadas and found the best one on an eatery in fron of Plaza Burgos, which was way better than the most publicized one along Calle Crisologo.

The best Empanada for me is found at an eatery fronting Plaza Burgos, prepared by Aling Peng. This one was more flavourful than other empanadas i tried .

This is the Empanada at Irene’s along Calle Crisologo . Its just ” so-so ” , but the store location is good; As such, this one sells better .

Sarawak-Brunei-Sabah : Backpacking Northern Borneo in 6 days

SAM_5268SAM_5322SAM_5635

Visiting Northern Borneo was not originally part of my backpacking route last March- April 2014 .  After spending more than two weeks in India and Nepal , my route supposedly was to head back to Kuala Lumpur , then Manila  ( which was the cheapest option by the way if you think of travelling to central Asia. )  But apparently at the time of booking my tickets online, my lust for wander brought me to find super cheap promo tickets from Kuala Lumpur  , to other key cities in Malaysia .  Still having a few days left , I then decided to take the long way back to the Philippines, and see more of the south by passing through Miri ( Sarawak State in Malaysia ), the Kingdom of Brunei , and Kota-Kinabalu (State of Sabah).

My promo tickets were quite cheap with  “Airasia” .  Got a morning flight from Kuala Lumpur to Miri ( Sarawak State ) at  731 pesos (around 15 usd All in ), And Kota Kinabalu ( State of Sabah ) to Manila at 947 pesos ( around 22 usd All in ). Bookings were made around 3 months in advance. Apparently, low cost intercity flights within Malaysia are more flexi and affordable ( as compared to local Philippine flights ). More so when they are on sale,  like what I got! =)    In between the two Malaysian States , I hopped on local buses , which were a bit consuming , but still worthy to do!

Easy-practical route ? not quite. Up for another travel adventure ? Totally !

Travelling between cities in Borneo is heaven for Passport Stamps Collector

Heres why .

Travelling within Malaysia is quite interesting. Malaysia is composed of several states , and it is a policy of the country for foreign travellers to have their passport stamped approved when crossing between certain states, which is actually ideal to monitor foreign individuals roaming around the Malaysian peninsula.  As such , travelling within Malaysia alone, would gain you quite a number of stamps , plus the stamps you get when crossing boundaries with Brunei.  The lands of Sarawak and Brunei are interlocked , so If you are on your way to Sabah from Miri/Sarawak , public buses would most likely pass through the capital of Brunei , then through Tendungan/Limbang towns of Sarawak , then enter Brunei once again through Puni/Labu eastmost provinces, then enter Sarawak once again through Lawas, before reaching the State of Sabah.  Just to give a simpler picture, here is how my 6 days travel from Miri to Brunei and to Kota Kinabalu  by LAND/BUS  went on..

  • Fly from Kuala Lumpur and Enter Miri, Sarawak  — 1 stamp at the airport

Stayed one night in  Miri

  • Exit Sarawak State at Sungai Tujuh  ( Malaysia side )  —  1 Stamp
  • Enter Brunei at Sungai Tujoh ( Brunei Side ) — 1 stamp

Stayed 2 nights in Bandar Seri Bengawan, Brunei

  • Exit Brunei at Kuala Lurah   — 1 Stamp
  • Enter Sarawak State at Tedungan  — 1 Stamp
  • Exit Sarawak State at Dermaga Kastam Limbang — 1 Stamp
  • Enter East Brunei at Puni  — 1 Stamp
  • Exit East Brunei at Labu — 1 Stamp
  • Enter East Sarawak at Lawas — 1 Stamp
  • Exit East Sarawak at Merapok — 1 Stamp
  • Enter Sabah State at Sindumin — 1 Stamp

Stayed 2 nights in Kota Kinabalu , Sabah

  • Fly out from  Kota Kinabalu to Manila — 1 Stamp at the airport

Thats 12 stamps in Total   =)

Bus Travel Details :  Miri — Bandar Seri Bengawan  — Kota Kinabalu

Miri to Bandar Seri Bengawan (BSB)  — PHLS Express runs a direct bus between BSB and Miri for 45 MYR/18 Brunei Dollars . The bus leaves Miri at 7AM and 1PM and takes about 4 hours to BSB . Bus leaves Miri at Pujut Intercity Terminal and stops at the Riverside Promenade in downtown BSB.

Bandar Seri Bengawan to Kota Kinabalu — Jesselton Express offers direct bus from Brunei to Kota Kinabalu at B$ 45  / 114 MYR, which runs only once a day at 7 am .  A bit pricey, but it is a direct ride so you wont have to change buses at the border. The total travel time is about 8 and 1/2 hours.  Jesselton Express leaves BSB at the riverside promenade fronting Maybank Building, and stops at Kota Kinabalu City Center bus terminal.

Option to ride a ferry to Kota Kinabalu is also available. But I prefer bus ride to see more of the countryside. =)

Daily Expense Tip : Food is relatively inexpensive In Miri and Kota Kinabalu . 10 USD would be more than enough for a day’s allowance, as there are a lot of hawkers and street side cafeterias for budget conscious travelers. with price ranging at 2 USD for a full meal.  Dormitories are much available for 5-8 USD per night, with breakfast.

Brunei however, might require you additional budget, especially with accommodation and getting around with public transportation. Brunei Dollars (BSD) is around the same Value as Singapore Dollars ( 35 pesos per 1 BSD ). An accommodation worth 20 BSD/pax was the cheapest that I came across in Brunei.  But on a brighter picture , food in Brunei is relatively affordable , if you buy from Gadong night market and grocery stores.  20 – 25 USD per day per pax would probably be a safe budget when travelling in brunei , that includes accommodation, food and getting around. Miri, Sarawak Malaysia Miri is a relatively small , but wealthy city of the northern part of Sarawak State. ( The more famous city in Sarawak is Kuching at the south ) . Miri may not talked about by usual Pinoy tourists like us , but this city is quite famous to westerners, as well as Australians , as the gateway to the nature reserved mountains of  inner Borneo , which is valued for its biodiversity and protected tropical wildlife sanctuary.  Aside from that, Miri is also known as the oil producing province of southern Malaysia.   Miri was just a transit city for me because I only stayed for one night. Aside from the nature parks and reserve (which I did not get to visit) , theres nothing much to do within the city of Miri . But I did have a good rest though, the dorm and the people were nice.

I would have wanted to get inside the Sultan’s Palace but it only opens at certain times of the year. As such, locals recommend tourists to visit Brunei , the week after Ramadan . It is when the Kingdom is at its most festive. They also said that The Sultan’s palace opens for locals and tourists , and sumptuous buffet is served by the royal family for three days , which is open for everybody.  And if lucky enough, you might also get a chance to see the Sultan . Thats something I look forward to experience when I visit Brunei Again =)

Getting Around Kathmandu in a Day

It was Spring when I visited Nepal , which was between March/April when the wind from the Himalayas gently cool Kathmandu valley and the rest of the mountainous country. Temperature is soothing at around 18 degrees C during daytime. Locals say it was the perfect time to visit the country , as it sometimes get uncomfortably warm in summer , and too cold during winter. ( Although it doesn’t snow in Kathmandu Valley ).

For those with limited time in Nepal , here are the recommended Visits to world heritage sites that should never be missed. These recommended places are just within Kathmandu, thus, visiting these four places can be fit in a day.

Allot some budget for Taxi or rickshaws , since the buses within Kathmandu City can be quite in chaos.  ( However, buses going to other cities are OK )

Visit Swayambounath Temple on early Morning to observe buddhist prayers – Swayambounath ( The Monkey Temple , also known as Harati Devi Temple )  is a Buddhist Temple that sits on top of a hill ,with an overlooking view of Kathmandu City.    It is ideal to visit Swayambounath temple early  in the morning  around 6 am to observe and even participate with buddhist locals chanting personal prayers while circumambulating around the stupa.

Swayambounath is just 15-20 minute taxi ride from Thamel , for 100 – 200 NPR ( 2 usd ) . Some tourist just walk it up from Thamel , for maybe around 30-45 minutes.  Meanwhile, me and a friend hopped on a rickshaw for 100 NPR, thinking that taxis would be to expensive. But apparently, rickshaws cannot go up the rolling terrain on the way to the temple , as such, we were just dropped off somewhere near and had to walk up for another 15 minutes. But it was a leisure walk as you get to pass by houses and a local school. =)

Entry fee is at 200 NPR (2 USD)

Pashupatinath Temple should not be missed . But do note that this place is not for the faint hearted. Pashupatinath is a Hindu Temple where Traditional Public Cremations are done. The temple stands on a  river bank where the dead is cremated , and the ashes hurled onto the water. The river, known to locals as the Bagmati, flows down and onto the holy Ganges river of India , where this Hindu Tradition originates.

Visit Pashupatinath Temple with an open mind, as you will definitely see cadavers here and smell burning flesh.

Entry fee = 1000 NPR at the main gate  ( or you can pass by another remote entrance on top of the hill, near the open park to get in for free)

Taxi from Durbar square to the Pashupatinath costs around 200 – 300 NPR .

From Pashupatinath Temple , It is fairly walkable to another World Heritage Site , the Boudhanath Stupa , which will take you around 30-40 minutes.  ( Get a direction from google map ) . Nonetheless , it will be a leisurely walk around downtown Kathmandu , and you will also pass by some commercial districts. Try some local snacks along the way. =)  Ideally, you will reach Boudhanath Stupa around 4 pm.

Backpacking Kathmandu Nepal with VISA on Arrival

Getting a Nepal Visa On Arrival (VOA) in Kathmandu is easy; Probably the most lenient entry  I’ve been to so far. Almost all nationalities, Filipinos included, can avail the Visa On Arrival in Kathmandu Airport.

What to Bring ( As of April 2014):

1. One Passport Sized  ID Picture , with white background (or you can avail of the services at the airport but its expensive.)

2. A Photocopy of passport containing Details.

3. Filled up VOA Form, available at the Arrival Area

4. Tourist Visa Fee : (All visas are multiple entry.  Nepal Immigration prefers to accept US dollars for the visa fee payment.)

—15 days or less, 25usd.

—30 days, 40usd

—90 days, 100usd.

For whatever reason, the Intl. Airport in Kathmandu was very relaxed and tolerant on arriving guest.  When I arrived , my backpack did went through the x-ray machine, but as i’ve observed, the officer did not even bother to check the x-ray monitor. Not Good !

Prepaid Airport Taxi is the best option to take you to the city center, for 750 NPR ( 8 usd ) . It would be ideal if you find a fellow tourist to share taxi with. After all, almost everyone would probably head to Thamel , which is the known tourists’ area at Kathmandu City Center.  As I’ve read, Public Transpo can be a bit unpredictable in Nepal, since the supply and cost of Fuel is also unstable .  The time I visited, there are no public buses that can take you out of the airport directly to the city center.   Airport to Thamel is around 45 minutes.  Roads are tight and dusty everywhere in Kathmandu, and seldom do you find an Air-conditioned Taxi, so prepare for that.

Where I Stayed :

Stayed at Happily Ever After Hostel at Thamel Marg, and you might have to get some directions from Google , as the roads in Thamel are like spider webs ! Its when hopping in a fix priced prepaid airport taxi comes in good use.

An overnight stay with Happily Ever After Hostel only cost me around 4.5 USD with breakfast.  Expect to share room with 10 people. But Beds were decent and comfortable. Dorms are not Air-conditioned, but it was Spring the time I visited Nepal so the weather is soothing and comfortably cool ( around 18 degrees C at daytime).

The Hostel Has a nice roofdeck , Crowd is more of yuppies and mountain climbers. No Kids allowed.

Nepal is relatively cheap to explore . Usual Food and Accommodation are cheap.  Just to give you a picture ,  1 USD is  around 100 NPR (Nepalese Rupee).  With an appetite like mine, I say that 5-7 USD /day food allowance is enough.  Bottled Water is also cheap in Nepal (30 NPR/ 0.30 usd per liter), as the country is abundant with fresh spring water. Small convenient stores are all around, just like Sari Sari Stores in the Philippines.

A usual full vegetarian meal   ( they call it “Daal Bhat “) will cost you 160 NPR  , with unlimited refill of Side dishes and Rice on most places !. So thats just around 1.5 usd for a heavy lunch.

Backpacking Delhi on a Cheap

Delhi was my last stop when I visited India , and as expected, my budget for this backpacking leg was expectedly depleting. I came from Agra, and food , accommodation and fare were a bit pricey there, not to mention the entrances. Given that, I tried to find cheap options  for my 3 nights stay in Delhi.   Here are some highlights. Was the savings worth the hassle ?  Lets find out. =)

Agra to Delhi is around 5 hours train ride , given the short distance, i opt to get the cheapest train seat class  ( The sleeper’s class ) for 250 INR ( 4 usd ).  It was difficult to personally get tickets at the station, but fortunately, A couchsurfing friend of mine booked my tickets online, which was a huge help !  The ticket booth in Agra was full packed, because it was Friday. and it would be close to impossible for me to get tickets on my own.

The Cheap Train Ride

The train to Delhi arrived 4 hours late, And whats even more hassle is that I actually hopped on the wrong train!  Though still heading its way to Delhi , but the train will stop at a southern station. I was a bit scared because the train officer might just shove me off the train at the middle of nowhere . But soon I found out that the officers do not check tickets at the sleeper’s class. Hooray for me!

It was a relief to find Fran and Greg at the sleeper's class , they were also unsure of they got in the right train. haha !

For Hassle free bookings, ask the hotel receptionist to book your tickets. Better seats at 600 + INR (10 + usd) will be offered to you, nonetheless.  And it comes with food water and snacks.

Getting around Delhi is actually easy and inexpensive, thanks to the efficient metro Train embracing all corners of the city.

Here are the Iconic spots in  delhi that I’ve Visited , without spending much on entrances.

The Ashkadram  Hindu Temple. Built during 1990’s , and is probably one of the most intricately made temples I’ve been to.  Highly recommended to Visit . This place also has a great vegetarian food court !

Location : 10 minutes walk from Ashkadram Station.

Ideal Time to Visit : Afternoon . allot 3 – 4 hours for the shows. 9:30 am – 7:30 pm , Tuesday to Sunday . (monday closed )

Entrance  :  Getting in is free of charge , since it is a place for worship! But the show ( Religious Hindu Movie) and other activities require a minimum fee of around 130 INR ( 2.5 USD ).

When In Delhi , food allowance of 400 INR/ day (around 7-8 usd) is actually enough if you are on a tight budget, as there are cheap sandwiches and vegetarian set meals (Thali) which is only around 60 – 80 INR ( 1 USD ) .   But seriously, you wouldn’t want to deprive yourself all the time, right?  Set Aside a better allowance for food and enjoy authentic Indian Cuisine. Whats Inside My Travel Backpack ?

Thought of sharing with you what nitty gritty things I usually bring with me when I travel. Just hand carry , Ive never done “checked in luggage” so far, since I started traveling solo. Travel light, travel smart lang ang style !

Here are my stuff =)

My backpack . just around 45 L , with a metal back support. inside this, I have a small sling bag , for my camera , notebook, and other stuff i carry out. As much as possible, both hands are free of anything =) i hate carrying more than one bag on long distances.

Sleeved Shirts for cold destinations. Plain colors are usually better on picture when traveling, the printed ones are just to obvious when you have used repeatedly. hihi =) Also , I only bring cheap ones by the way (some, second hands), because there are times that i leave behind used clothes to give space for some stuff i bought along the way. Always check on the current season of your destination, to know what type of clothes to bring. The time I went to Nepal, it was Spring of 2014, sleeved clothes were a big help. and Since it was cool, I never sweat a lot, so its ok to use clothes repeatedly.

As a solo backpacker, I really make an effort to do research before hand. I also study the locations of the sites I want to visit, and If it walkable from a train station or a famous landmark accessible by cheap public transpo. Taxi is always my last option. =) As seen in this photo , I print outed out walking maps from google, which was really helpful, and also easier for locals to assist you with directions. Lucky if you get to have a real map for free. But usually, google maps area OK. Also as shown, print out my online tickets , and at the back of it, I print the hostel booking i have in that area of destination, to save up paper.

So far, these are my usual travel essentials , which could fit into a 45 L carry on backpack , good for a month journey .  Traveling light has always been my priority, and  I do not  bring laptop, my wifi ready smartphone is already enough. I also do not bring a professional’s DSLR, just one high res. Digital Camera.

Do you have other travel essentials in mind? Feel free to add up some items you carry , that are not on my list. Your thoughts are welcome =)

Solo Backpacking Essentials

I always had this fondness for solo backpacking, and I am fully aware of the consequences and risks of traveling alone, especially on foreign land where everything is relatively unfamiliar. As such, I always make a point to prepare my thoughts and do a lot of readings and inquiries before I the trip. Here are my basic preparations. Hope this would help.

1. Research .
-Read blogs . I prefer inquiring on blogs and personal accounts of experienced backpackers who already traveled my eyed destination. rather than just reading wikipedia and travel websites.
– Know the route . Steps in Border crossing. Airport to city center transportation . know where the backpackers area is. download google map,, use walking direction tools just to have an idea.
– Research on country specific entry Visa , if applicable.
– know which tourist spots are worthy of a visit, because you don’t really have to see everything. Read a bit of history of the place. You will appreciate your visiting experience more when you know what made it happen.

2. Exchange currency ahead of time. especially when traveling by land, since border crossings and bus transportation require local bills . If u use dollars, you might not get any change.

3. A backpack of basic essentials.
– Pack lite . If you are traveling for a month, pack clothes that is good for 2 weeks. You can just have them washed at the middle of your trip . Some backpackers Ive met only brings very few clothes, and prefer to buy cheap ones at their destination.
– cargo pants and Cargo shorts . preferably dark colors so it wont get dirty easily.
– Bring a small , quick dry towel. Bath Towels are usually available with the hostels . If not, then you just have to make full use of what you have.
– Bring a small pillow ,preferably a neck pillow, which is very helpful especially on bus trips.
– medicine pack. particularly for tummy upset and pain relievers.
– sun block and Anti mosquito lotion – small bottle or sachet (because 100 ml bottles and up , might be confiscated in the airport )

4. Comfortable footwear.
1 pair of rubber shoes , preferably the one you use often. New shoes might give you blisters which can be very hassle.
I don’t bring slippers anymore, I prefer to buy them on markets , if necessary .

5. A wifi enabled – smart phone . not only for communication ,, but more for researches and google mapping by the time you get there. Hotels usually have wifi for guests .

– end of list –

Can anyone make recommendations on how you prepare your trips ?
